Here's what I got done in SD yesterday at 65 degrees temp. (Went down to 28 overnight). That's a 1952 FORD 14 inch mounted plow. Just put new shares (New Holland) on it. When I find a plow for the H , it will take over this chore. Now to get it disced!

To answer the questions. This is in Davidson Co. SD, 7 miles west of Mitchell. And yes it is "new ground"
I bought it 5 years ago, 50 acres.Another 6 or so as an abandoned railroad right of way is my north property line. Had not had a crop on it EVER! This is virgin prairie grass. Mostly Brome. Creek runs through it so it was always rented out for pasture. Got a federal wetlands designation on the creekbed acres (22) and got a county designation of "marshland" for that so the tax dollars went to almost zero. Check that out guys, no one else around here has that but I found it through the state website, phone calls to equalization. I am grooming it solely for wildlife habitat, a little sweet corn, and enough corn, feed sorgham, and sunflowers for the deer and pheasants. Also built a brooder house and small flight pen for the 150 hen and 50 rooster pheasants I release every spring. Now to keep the big whitetail bucks from roaming to the west! Gordo

Aach, you people! We still have a foot of snow on the ground in WI. Well, all right, some of that melted on Sunday, but still!
Just came back from CO (saw Ernie Bob) and the people disking on Feb. 28th made me envious. Made me realize that spring comes everywhere else first and that fuel is the most expensive right here at home. With our heavy soil, we feel lucky to get in the field by the middle of May. Last year it was June.
The other side of the coin is that in July, when you guys are dry as a fart, we might still have some soil moisture to grow crops- very little irrigation is done here.
Oh well, I'm not ready yet anyway!
Paul

I wasn't quite lucky enough to get to drive a tractor yesterday. Did my plowing last fall. Small garden patch, but I was able to work it down yesterday with the ol' Troy-Bilt.

now where the heck do you live in SD that you could be doing that yesterday????? i'm in eastcentral and up to my knees in mud!!! a friend came over on sat. to get some hay and he buried the truck in my driveway. i tried to pull him out and buried my truck. the ole 766 got quite a work out but was able to yank both rigs out. it really tore up the yard bad though. now today it's all frozen ruts everywhere. the wife's not happy...can't drive her car cause the driveways all tore up!

Hi Gordo,

The wife needed some things out of storage, so we took a drive down to the farm yesterday.

Windy, dirty, and a blustry day here, but the big guns were out discing down stalks just as hard as they could go.

So, maybe the seasons are a changin'? :>)

What is that you are plowing? Almost looks like open ground in the picture. Nothin' like the smell of freshly turned dirt! :>)
