I posted this on the general discussion part, but I would like more insight. The power steering on my 856 seems to "freeze" in the cold weather. I have changed the filter & there is no water in the hy-tran oil. After running for some time in will "thaw". Can the flow divider be checked without removing the MCV? What else should I look for? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, PJ

I had the same problem once. There was water accumulated in the steering cylinder that didn't reserculate back to the sump.Every time the temperature droped below freezing the cylinder would freeze up.This can be easilly checked by teeing a hydraulic gauge in one of the steering lines and leting it set outside over nite.If the pressure climbs to 2200 PSI when you turn the steering wheel and the front wheels don't turn you know there is a block of ice in the cylinder or steering gear.To fix you will have to remove the radiator and remove the top cover on the front bolester and remove the large nut on the steering gear and lower it out the bottom to remove the water.

Yes , BUT it has spring pressure behind it and it can be a bear to get back in . Have you ever done a pressure check on the MCV system ?? With the age of the tractor it may be time for a spring kit And most all of them are a bit slugish in the steering department when cold . It also could be that your filter is picking up the moisture out of the oil and slowen the flow to the pumps . Have you ever started the tractor when it was cold and let it run for a few min . and then pulled the cover off and took a look at the filter and screen to see if there is any ice build up .

I have looked at the filter & screen after running and not found any ice. What is the best way to pressure check the MCV sysem? Are you talking about a spring kit for the MCV system? Also, what is the secret of taking the flow divider out, because it seems like a wrench would slip and I can not get a socket on it? I sure do not want to round off the head!!!

To do a pressure check ya need a fitting to go into the bottom of the mcv and hook a gauge there . or if you can come up with the set up that you install in place of the dump valve but that you will have to buy . i like the mcv to have 265 to 285 lbs also check and make sure that there is nothing blocking the steering orface . When ever i do a T/A i go thru the mcv and replace all gskts and o/ring and install a new spring kit and do a flow check on the pump and then and only then do i replace the pump.

Should the MCV be my main focus or should I also look at the Control (pilot) valve? What about that small steel ball in the control valve? It is impossible to steer when the engine is not running.
