Another post on my Regular brass side draft carb. It seems that no matter how I set my float clearance, I still have gas running thru the governor housing into the OIL PAN!!!!! ! Have tried several settings, but no matter where I seem to set the float, it seems to not shut off and and runs into the crankcase????? ?? What am I doing wrong????? ??? BTY, the float had been replaced with a brass one instead of the original cork. Could the brass one be heavier than the cork????? ?? The seat does shut off when testing on the bench by blowing and the float is free. Seems like enough gas does not build up into the bowl in order to shut the float off. ANY HELP would be greatly appreciated. About the only other option that I can think of right now is to convert it to a F20 type. Thanks in advance. JIM

Wow that is bad. You would have to be filling up your intake manifold completely with gas to get it into the crank case! When you blew through the inlet on the carb was the carb assembled? If not try it assembled to make sure the float isn't sticking on the side of the bowl. Just blow with it rightside up and then try it with the carb upside down. That inverted position should set the needle and stop the air. If not the float may be sticking or possibly the needle fell out during assembly.

Nothing ruins the value of a Regular as fast as converting to F20 carb and it will cost you to do it.

Thanks for all the advice. Believe me, I will follow it!!!!! !!!! Checked on a F20 manifold and carb, and you are correct, it does cost a small fortune to convert it and it surly will detract from the value!!!!! !!!! Will follow both of you guys advice and go thru it again. I am not an expert, but have a great deal of patience. It has been frustrating, to say the least, as I did not hurry thru it just to get it done, but it is disappointing to end up with what I have now. Will have to drain the crankcase and refill with fresh oil. Thanks again for the imput. JIM

I struggled with the carb on my 1928, but it works pretty well now. It has been 4 years since I have had to work on mine. I am working from memory, so forgive me if the following isn't completely correct.

Remove the air cleaner connection - see if the gas is running out the intake. At least this will prevent the crankcase from filling. I am surprised that gas isn't dripping from some of the carb vents on the backside near the needle.

How is the gasket/fit between the mixing float bowl and the stem/nut that holds the cover on. If this leaks, the bowl will never fill enough to float. Is there a pin hole in the bottom or the neck?

Also try assembling the bowl and top (with stem nut), but not the mixing chamber. Apply fuel. See if / where it leaks.

Are you assembling the bowl with carb upside down? This makes sure the float is positioned, and cannot be caught on the bowl. Is the float centered in the bowl?

I bent arm on the float so it was a little less than level - i.e. float in full up position angles downward from the needle end. Try to starve it. But, it sounds like you have adjusted this though.

THANKS to the answers on my post. I appreciate the comments. I know that I blew thru the carb after the float assembly was in, but can not remember if it was completely assembled, and the needle and seat did work. Am not sure it I rechecked after it was completely assembled. As you say, the needle could have fallen out. Perhaps I have the float set incorrectly????? When I took it apart, it seems as if the float did not have a lot of travel, so I increased the travel of it, made it open more. Maybe that is the problem????? I am going to remove it again and before I do anything to it, I will check to see if the needle is still in place by the "blowing method". I know that it took me 3 times on my F20, but I finally got it!!!!! !!!!!
Does anyone offer a kit for the carb????? You might have hit the nail on the head when you mentioned the gasket fit between the mixing float bowl and the stem/nut that holds the cover on, because it seems like the bowl will not fill enough to float the "float". I thought that the float was centered, but again not can swear on it. Also, I do think that maybe some of the vent holes might be leaking????? ? Thanks again. JIM

Otto gas engine works did offer a rebuild kit.
It included the gaskets, main nozzel and a brass float. I bought one a few years ago, it was 60 some dollars. I had the same problem with my 29 Regular, it still have the old cork float in it.
After I rebuilt the carb it was fine.
