I just tried replaceing the large upper bolster bushing on my farmall M. I purchased the bushing from my local dealer and when I tried replaceing it, I got it about 3/4 of the way in and it stoped moving. It seemed like it was to big for the hole. Has anyone had this problem, or have any trade secrets to share on how to put it in. I was just useing a hammer and block of wood.

Mine went in difficult too, but it did go. I lubed everything and took my time. The real challenge was the upper seal, that I did eventually ruin. I had Napa cross the number and came up with a seal that was only half as thick as was originally sent me. I built an "installer" out of ready thread and then double sealed the shaft with the thinner seals...

I thought about fileing a little away at the split so it would a be a liitle smaller but was afraid it would be to loose and spin. Also is the felt retainer suposed to be a press fit or is it supposed to be loose.

Biff, When you replaces the upper bolster bushing, did you replace the oil seals and bearings? I need to do the same on my M and was wondering how hard it is to replace the other parts. I was getting ready to place about the same post as you did. Looks like were on the same page in the parts manual (TC-28, page 195).

Thanks leroy P.

Andy has the right idea to finish it up and not
damage it either.I was able to drive mine in using
an oak block,I think what helped was putting it
in freezer over night,I actually cleaned up the
bore on mine using a drill with small wire wheel
then lubed it up,It fought me some but wasn't
too bad.

They are tough to get in.

If you did not peen over the end of the bushing it should go on in with a puller. Lubricate the remaining bore good with a penetrating lubricant.

Make a screw puller preferably with a stepped plate to keep the screw centered on the bushing. I've used a 1" screw with acceptable results.
