I have a diesel 560 but don't know what year it is. The TA housing has been changed and the tag on it is for a 58 model. My tractor has the aluminum handle on the pto shifter with the over center pto clutch. What year did they change that?
Could I get the year from the engine ser# ,it has a primer pump next to the fuel filters also. Thanks for any info. It also has the short turn ,or close turn kit installed,if that helps any.

560's had different pto's the early ones had the band clutch type the later had the clutch disks they won't interchange with out changeing gear ratio up front on the pto drive gears.Like has been said look for the letters on the castings.58 is d,59 is e,60is f,61 is g,62 is h,63 is j. I would guess you have a late 62 or 63.

Chris: I don't think you are going to find out much other than from casting codes. IH were selling a lot of those 282 diesels for other uses, thus engine serial will tell you very little. There were probably more 282 diesels going for crawlers, stationary engines, etc, than to farm tractors. I don't think the pto lever ever changed on 560 as mine was a 63 and it had that same setup.

Does your tractor have fast hitch, as draft control linkage for that was different on early ones. When you speak of short turn kit, I presume you mean steering linkage. That is nothing more than center control arm from a 656. Does your tractor have the indication on it that rear end and transmission were up graded by IH?

I think I would turn to casting codes and as CNKS said, Guy Fay can enlighten you best on that one. I know my 63 Farmall 140 still has the traditional number and letter codes, but that doesn't mean big ones do. My 560 has been gone since 1978, so just don't remember the code item.

I don't know about the PTO lever, and the engine serial has little to do with when it was assembled. Check the casting codes on the major castings in the form of 3*6*D -- March 6, 1958, the * looks like a screw. D is 1958, 1963 (last year of production) is I, unless IH skipped some letters, my list stops at D, I assume they continued consecutively--Guy Fay says I was dropped, so J might be 1963.
