Hi All,

This old 1066 is for sale here locally. I'm pretty pretty darned sure it is a "paint hides all" kind of a thing.

Just eye candy,

Allan

That's TOO purdy to put to work! Makes me want to spring for a seat for my 666 'stead of the heap or rat chewed foam and old jacket that i get to park my bony behind on. Wouldn't even mind recovering/making one if I could find a non-rusted through back that wasn't worth half what I paid for the whole dang tractor! Maybe I should just look for another 666 in way better shape and relegate "The Beast" to parts! Oh no....that would be Allan from NE itis settin' in! LOL!

When I first saw this thread,I thought somebody was commenting on a tractor pic with a perky female aboard.....
Of course the tractor would still win out...in my opinion...

Allan, I call it " Sucker Polish" or "a coat of paint hides a multitude of sins"
At first it really catches you eye then after a little, all these little things start popping out and screams 'trader tractor'.
Why are the grab handles painted red instead of black, wrong fenders, only need one light. Fenders are incorectly set for the tires. Would love to see the wear on the 3 pt set-up, drawbar, Why would a person have a 150 hp class tractor with NO cast wt of any kind?, ?, ? Maybe it was stripped by the original owner they shipped out of the area, for she has some problem that doesn't rear is ugly head till she has run for a half a day.
Anyway, my thoughts! It sure is pretty at first Look!
Later,
John A.

John, I'm just askin' out of curiousity. Could they have made an open station out of it hence the wrong fenders? Also the wt. deal. maybe the dealer wants to make an extra buck buy making the buyer buy them separate or use the weights as a bargaining chip.
Just a thought
Ross

Ross, The answer to both of your questions is yes. It is possible to convert a cabed tractor to openstation and the wts kept as a bargaining chip.
Later.

I've always thought the 66 series looked the best without a cab. This one don't look to bad despite some of the painting flaws.

For some reason them fenders just do not look right. Am I wrong or do they look a tad short and improperly mounted

Hi Dave,

They are for sure the wrong fenders; seems like we have and abundance of lights going on here in addition to the mounting issue.

Probably off of a 06, or 56 model? 66s just had the one light in the fender; other two were out front.

Also, notice the Jap alternator and the missing shield for the pulley?

Old tractors; ain't they fun? :>)

Those fenders are height adjustable; Looks like larger tires and/or wheels have been added without fender raising.

Hey Allen,

Thanks for the 1066 picture, that give me motivation to get my 1066 looking good like that. I will print it out and put it in the shop as a goal. Are the front hubs white or red origanally, I have seen both ? I also need to get the handles that go around the T/A and the shifter, and the sheet metal above the battery, any idea where I can get that, dealer still have it ?

John,

Is it the battery covers that you need? These can be had from Mike at www.steelwheelranch.com for at about $20 a pop, I think.

The grab handles are sold at www.batescorp.com and go for $35 a throw. All 766 thru 1466 handles should be the same.

Hi John,

I know this guy; he stands back and throws a bucket of paint at 'em, runs 'em to the tire shop for a set of new tires and then sells the old gizmos for a premium price.

The white wheels are wrong; I think IH stopped that little practice back with the 56 series, didn’t they? Also note the grab handles got the "red" treatment too; they should be black.

Are these the panels you need? I just "walked thru the fire" finding these. However, I have a sneaking' suspicion that I'm doubled up with the shop that is redoing my tractor, as they were buying parts off of a part-out about 100 miles form here and may already have these things.

I'll know on Tuesday and if these do end up being extras, you are sure welcome to 'em. By the way, they should be painted red too, not the white like in the picture.

Allen,

Those are one that go just above the battery on either side, right. They look like that. You getting rid of them, what might you be looking for on them ? Thanks

John,

I'll try and get into town the first part of the week and see if they are needed, if not you can have 'em for what they cost me (which wasn't much).

The front rims were painted red from the factory. As for the battery covers you can still get them from dealer for about $50. You can also get them and the handles from A&I aftermarket for about half the price of the dealer.

Hi Doc,

IH tractors didn't come equipped with front brackets, weights or the retainer hardware. Those were sold as add on "accessories". :>)

Yea i know but when i see one that does not have it i know that someone has taken it off because i have never seen one sold new with out one plus the weights on the ft. Not sayen that some where that a dealer did not sell one bare but around here when you got a new tractor it came with a full rack on the ft. The first 806 that was ever sold around here was bought by my old boss and she came with a full rack and the second one was bought by my uncle came with a full rack plus 4 sets on the wheels. that is how it came in on the truck because when he and i went to the I H dealer just as we pulled in the truck pulled in and before they had the chains off my uncle bought it it went into the shop and got checked out and loaded back up and was at the farm that after noon off the truck to the fuel tank and on the harvester and in the field before 2 that afternoon. That tractor never had a chance to recover from shippen fever.

It's entirely possible that the 1066 in question has never seen a weight bracket.

I'm about 125 miles East of Allan, and around these parts I don't remember ever seeing a large IH tractor with weight brackets. The 886 we bought new didn't have one, and the 966 I remember our neighbors having didn't either. Here in the Nebraska Sandhills it's grass country, not much tillage goes on, and even less went on back when these IH's were new. These tractors primarily were used to pull haysleds to feed stacks of hay to cattle- rolling loads, and the extra ballast wasn't neccessary. Plus, a great number of them were also fitted with either a loader or a dozer blade.
