I have a 140 that wants to sputter and die when I take off in gear. It also does the same thing when I lower the lifts but not when I raise them. I have less sputter with the front lift than the rear.
I have installed new plugs, points, cap button and plugs. All are set to the manual settings. The hyd oil has been changed with fresh hy-tran. It does a little better after it has been running about 1/2 hour but still wants to die. Anybody had the same trouble or ideas on what is wrong? I have also installed a new fuel supply valve and bowl. Thanks for any help..

As others said, sounds like it is running too lean. If no main jet adjustment on the carb (likely is none), there may be something in the carb passages that is restricting fuel flow to the main jet. If all else fails, take the carb off and give it a good cleaning making sure all passages are open. Also, check the float level. May need to raise it up to have higher fuel level in bowl.

Does that carburetor have the main jet adjusting screw? If it does you should give it a 1/2 turn
CCW to open it. Sounds like the engine may be running lean. Apply the choke briefly to see if the sputtering stops. Hal

If there's a main needle valve at the bottom of the carburetor bowl you need to open it by turning
it 1/2 turn CCW. This will allow more fuel into the engine. Did you apply a little choke to see
if it still sputters? Hal

I applied the choke but it still tried to die. I made the recommended adjustment and it seemed to warm up more quickly. Within a couple of minutes the lift worked with no disruption. Thanks

Glad to help out. If you use the tractor for plowing or any use that requires more power and requires the governor to kick in to maintain engine speed and it sputters you may need to open
the needle valve some more. Good Luck, Hal
