hey, we have a '57 farmall 450. I went out to move it but when I put it 4th gear and started moving, the tractor was under too much load. I stopped it and put it in 2nd but when I let out the clutch it stalled. I restarted it and while I was running through the gears I noticed it wouldn't go into either 4th or 5th gear. I put it in neutral and started to let out the clutch but it acted as if it were in 5th gear. I stuck it back into 2nd, but before the clutch was all the way out, the tractor came under a load as if I had the brakes on, which i didn't. To get it out of the way, I put it in neutral and drove it a ways. All this time it went at the speed of 5th gear. As I was going I shifted it into the T/A, which acted normal. It still is doing all these things and I would like to know what is wrong.

Thanks, everyone. I did what you suggested and it took care of the problem right away. Thanks again.

Ya got her locked in 5th, Pull the shifter off and look and see if all three rails are lined up . If not then take the one that is not lined up and move it so that the slot is even all the way across . Your shifter is getting woren and if you don't make stright movement it will do this. You can try and find a better used one or if you are handy with a welder and grinder you can rebuild it .

It sounds like its stuck in two gears at once you willhave to take the shifter out and take a big regular screwdriver and a flashlight and look down in and align all the rails together with the notches in them your shifter is probly worn on the bottom causing this needs a little weld put on it. The shifter has a round ball like knob on the trans end. this ball wears out and slips inbetween the shift rail slots in the trans. take the leaver out (usually a pin that is driven out sideways) and pull the leaver out. Take a screw driver (big) and a small flashlight and peer down in the hole. move the slots so they all line up ((clutch in to unload the trans gears). Fifth will be out of line. think in upside down and backwards, as the leaver pivots on the ball at the top of the casting. Have the ball welded up to the original size with a fairly hard material, and grind it to fit nice in the rail slots. smooth the ball with 220 silicon carbide paper to make it compatible with the slots and not wear them out. Good Luck, it isn't hard to do, Jim.
