I have an analyzer that the instructions say "double the reading for a four cylinder engine". At low idle it reads 450 and the engine sounds about right and idles good. At 950 The engine sounds like about 1800 to 2000. How do you check RPM?

When attempting to start off in 5th gear the engine will die. I cannot "milk" it to get it to pick up and go in 5th.

Does your H do this?

I am still working the suggestions from my post H, starts great, Stalls.

Thank you all

i have a manual tach that you hold firmly to the engine and it works off vibrations mine reads double the rpm becouse it goses off the faster shaft which would be the camshaft so when you get the reading you divide by 2

Comon now Dan,

You haven't had your morning coffee yet. )grin(

The camshaft turns at half the speed of the crankshaft.

boy i guess you are right
what was i thinking?? i dont know what i was thinking
but i do know that the tach i have reads double the engine speed becouse i have tried it on a couple of my tractors plus my pickup that have tachs on them and its very acurate not sure what is turning to make it read double but i know what ever its reading divided by 2 is the engine rpm for instance on my ford 5000 with the throtle set to the tractors tach at 750 my mechanicle tach reads 1500 and when i set the tractor to 1900 for pto speed the mechanicle tach reads 3800
my brain fart from this morning could be do to lack of diesel fumes ill have to go fire up my 350 diesel and go for a ride

It says double the reading, so when it reads 450 the engien would be turning 900.

Was raised on 2 H tractors, and both would take off in 5th gear with a moderate load.

If your H is set up for low compression and is well worn, starting out in 5th would be out of the question.

Your stalling problem and the lack of power might have the same cause.

I have a '40 farmall H and it didn't start out well in 5th when i got it. Put new plugs in and it goes fine with a little clutch feathering.

I had my H rebuilt a couple years ago. It starts out out in 5th gear without any problem. At least there is on benefit from the screwing i took on the rebuild.

Contrary to what other have said,I have been able ot get my H and my M going from a dead stop in 5th,granted with no load.As mentioned it takes alot of practice and years of running them to do it,but I can do it.

Your low and high idle speeds sound about right. I check PTO speed on a dyno to determine if the engine RPM's are correct. With a load, you probably won't get the H to start from a stand-still in 5th. You'll need to get moving in 4th and then shift to 5th. Takes a little practice, but eventually you'll learn to match gear speeds using the throttle and clutch to shift without grinding. Without a load, I would think it would take right off in 5th. Probably needs a good tune-up/carb rebuild.

I have never attempted to get any H or M rolling from a standing start in 5th gear. You need to get it rolling in 4th, and then shift up to 5th.
The 950 rpm on the analyzer, doubled for a 4 cylinder would equate to 1900 rpm, which would be just about right for an H.

I'v used a tach made by Stihl and that seems to work pretty good. They cost about 40 or 50 bucks at a Stihl dealer. Just clamp on to the spark plug wire and it gives you the RPM. Andrew

you might check your govener linckage to the carb they break.I have a M with 38x14.5 tires. it starts off in fifth gear at 1/4 throttle. no problem.also check govener adjustments. these tractors have no power if the govener doesn't work right.
