I have a Farmall B tractor sn. 176699 I think and 1946 model. Does anybody know what type of a starter rod is this tractor suppose to have. A foot operated push rod or a pull operated rod?

Thank-you in advance.

Jerry, The "B" would have had the foot operated push rod.

The B that i grew up with had a foot operated rod. You pushed it forward.

Thank-you for the information. I sure do appreciate it. A couple of other things I was wondering about; was the front head lights painted red or black, also was the front Farmall emblem black in the center or just raised letters. In my operators manual book it shows it black, but everybody tells me it wasn't.

Jerry, Prior to the end of WWII, many Farmalls, which would include your B, were purchased without lights from the factory. Lights could be added as a dealer option, and in that case could be either red or black, depending on what color they were when the dealer got them. If a generator was added, the same thing would apply. A generator would be red if installed at the factory, but could be either red or black if installed later either by a dealer or ordered from a dealer and installed by the owner. Oh yes, that also goes for a starter. As to the front emblem, The reproductions arent painted as they are for the H and M"s. I painted one and it turned out just fine. You simply paint the whole facial surface black, then while it is still tacky, take a smooth textured rag and soak it lightly with thinner and wipe off the raised portion of the emblem. It takes some patience so as not to touch the painted portion, but it is much easier and the results are more professional looking than trying (in vain) to mask those areas you don"t want painted. If you do totally screw it up, it isnt that hard to strip and redo. I was lucky that I got it right the first time. Another hint on those reproduction emblems. They will need some filing or cutting to conform to the grill itself. Do that first (with patience), and make sure it fits before painting.

Headlights should be painted red as is most everything on the letter series tractors. Front emblem should have the background painted black. The ones for the H/M come that way but you have to paint the ones for the A/B yourself. Dave.
