HAULING A M

Guys, be carefull when you are hauling your old tractors. Last Sunday someone was hauling a good looking M on a small car trailer behind a Jeep Cherokee when a trailer tire blew causing the trailer to swerve into the guard rail. The M which was only tied down with straps flew right over the guard rail into a ravine. With a broken axle housing, front bolster, steering column, seat, and grill and hood damaged he ended up with nothing but some parts. So please make sure you have enough of a trailer and vehicle to pull it and tie them down with chains and boomers.

I too have to haul my M. I upgraded from a Ramcharger with a 318 to a 3/4 GMC with a 454 in it..I never load with chains and boomers. I had a DPS trooper pull me over one afternoon just to look at my M. I have a neighbor to loose one of thoes green tractors off a goosekneck because he did not have it chained down; broke it into to.

I suppose it can happen any time, and I would never tow an M behind that small a vehicle. If the trailer had 2-3500 lb axles and P metric tires as most do the guy was asking for it even if he was towing with a one ton. Tractor weighs about 5000, trailer 2000, barely within limits. I know that people use that type trailer for M's, but there is simply no margin for error. H yes, M no.

Inadequate tiedowns and inadequate tow vehicle and probably inadequate hitch and trailer for the job. Tie downs should be stout enough and tight enough that even if the trailer turns over, etc. that the tractor still stays on it.

A Farmall M on a car trailer behind a Jeep Cherokee. That guy deserved what he got!! It is very fortunate that no one was hurt. It is just as well that the tractor is now junk, that guy wasn't smart enough to be a tractor owner.

Larry,

I always have said that these tractors don't belong on a trailer on a hiway unless it is absolutely necessary.

But, ya see people draggin 'em all over the country, it seems.

Just my opinion,

Allan

Allen you have a good point. However if people did not haul tractors around there would be no Red Power Roundup or local shows, plowdays or parades in fact would probaly put an end to this old tractor thing.

Larry:
Thank you for the reminder...that tractor could have flipped over onto a car and killed someone...it's not worth taking a chance .

I pull my SM all over the place and have never had any trouble. In the past I had a F150 with a 4.6 V8, only 260 hp. There's 5 set's of weights on the rear of the SM. Nope, never any trouble. This year I have a F250, did up grade the truck, only because the other one had 167000 miles and kind of lacked pep. Think the key here is, do you're maintenance on you're trailer, grease the bearings, keep good rubber on it, and most importantly make sure you have trailer breaks on both axles.

I do agree about chain's. Why do guys use straps?

On my way to Tennesee one year we saw a classic vet, bout a 65' stuffed in the back of a Chevy pick-up on the highway, seems there was a big wreck and they just could not stop fast enought. And when they did the strap's could not take the strain.

To bad, one less piece of history for every one to look at.
