Why did the company decide to make the Regular pulley/pto lever engage when pushed forward, and on the F-20 to be pulled backwards to engage. 2. Why is there a 1/4in or so hole 1/2way up the shaft of the speed lever on a Reg, and none on a 20. 3 Why did they switch from updraft to down draft Carbs on the 2 models? Why does the 20s shifter lever bottom plate have markings showing the direction of the gears, and the Reg dosent. you would think it would be the other way around, if any. Why does ever picture i seee of a Reg show the seat spring being mounted somwhere on the rear axle, and going up to the seat on a 45% slant, yet the one I have here has a seat flat stock sprring comeing straight out back of the rear axle, being mounted above it. Why did IH Switch from Brass Carbs to cast carbs, and, which is better, and period for a 29? And finally I wont even ask why they decided to put opn a oil filter in 29 sometime. My 34 CC Case dosent have one, and I dont think they had them on Cases up into the early 40s, tho I could be wrong. I know they didnt have them on any of the CCs, except for maybe the 39. I know, I know, lotta questions. Hope to get lotta answers.

All your questions can be answered in one word- "Evolution".

Then, as now, products from any company were and are in a constant state of evaluation- with engineers studying them and also getting feedback from the end user. They're looking for ways to make the product, whatever it is, both more user-friendly(like the pto lever), reliable(like the oil filter) and cheaper to produce(switch in carb materials).

Good questions!!!!! ! Have wondered about some of the same things. My opinion-- the brass carb seems to wear very easily on the regular, such as where the choke plate is. They also had a cork float, unless it has been replaced with a brass one, like mine has. As far as the oil filter goes, I believe it was an after market filter made by Purlator?? They were brass and were made to be washed and reused. The only thing that was pressured by the oil pump and filtered was the oil to the governor housing. All the oil the rocker assembly recieved was thru the oil cups on the valve cover. In my opinion (only) I do not think the brass carbs were all that reliable, with the cork float (unless changed to brass) and believe it was more like a mixer type instead of a carb. Again, this is only my opinion. The oil filter does not seem to be of a lot of use. Like you said, my 1929 and 1931 Case do not have them. Again, good questions and hope I have been of some help. I am sure that it will raise some other opinions. Jim in ILL.

Wel you could ask similar questions about the evolution of a Ford Mustang. I would suppose the belt pully lever could be kicked out of gear (if needed) if dissengaging forward. Brass is more expensive than cast iron. Updrafts don't flood as easy as downdrafts. There were several diferent types of seats that are correct to a regular as it evolved. The last of them being a channel seat like an F-20. Oil filters just make sense!

I hear you on throwing the belt pulley out of gear with foot if necessary. I am a collector of IHC but have driven Cat and JD more in my youth. The Cat clutchs threw forward to get out of gear while the JDs throw forward to go in. When your hooking up to equipment or in tight quarters with strutures and or people it could (still can for keepers of history)be dangerous. It takes focus not to get yourself or others in a pinch!

Used to regularly back a Case stemer into the belt. So much happening and flopping lucky no one ever got injured setting the wheel wedge.

I"m very surprised to hear that Mustangs came with belt pulleys. I"ve never seen one with that option.
