I have been working on a couple of Farmalls and have replaced, repaired, rebuilt and now in the process of restoring. It is a lot of hard work to do all this and I don't want to get off track. There are about a million suggestions about restoration and mechanically I have spent the time and money. I want to complete these myself and the next step is prep & paint. 95% of prep is complete. The problem I have is the cost of paint. Dupont 7410 costs $400.00 a gallon. That is way off and out of reason in my opinion. That ain't counting the etching primer and sheet metal primer. IH did not use Dupont did they? Heck, I just want a good restoration. Not a museum peice.
Any kind words?

I have had very good luck with PPG's Omni line w/hardener. I can't think of exactly what it cost me, it's been a few years, but $100 a gal sounds about right. But $400 a gallon? No way I would ever pay that! At that price,I'd be extra careful not to spill that stuff loading it into the gun!

Here is my $.02 on paint. It's hard for me to get time to work on the antique tractors. I end up working on them late at night after the kids are in bed as I'm sure lots of other people have to do. So I can't understand why someone would go and use a paint that might last 2 years. I'm looking at keeping these machines for a long time, I want 20+ year paint jobs. Put it this way. Cheap paint $30/gal ,tisco, van sickle, Good paint $100/gal ppg's omni, duponts nason

your saving about $70 bucks on the paint, yes primers also are different in price. It cost more than $70 to replace the battery box on a M. Why go cheap now if your going to paint it in the first place.

They did not paint them from the factory with 400 dollar a gal paint and if the 2150 paint was good enough to get my 1954 Super M TA on the 1994 Red Power Viedo then i would say that it is good enough . And it had a shine that you could read the Farm and Dairy or Farm World in reverse from the hoods and at 25 feet you could read what was on your hat but it's your money and keep in mind that it is a tractor not a Hemi Road Runner.

DuPont and PPG both have cheaper paint than that. PPG Omni acrylic urethane can be had for less than $100/gallon, including hardener. Gallon sizes of MP170 epoxy primer and MP182 primer surfacer, along with the reducers, etc will push the cost close to $300, and you will have some left over, I don't know if these are available in quarts, you don't need much MP182. DuPont Nason, the Omni equivalent, is probably a little higher, but not $400. These are better paints than CIH 2150, and can be used as a system, since all components are compatible. There is no guess work as the spec sheets tell you everything you need to know regarding prep, mixing and use. $400 a gallon sounds more like a bc/cc system used on a car--it will last forever, but really is not needed on a tractor. I have forgotten the year of your tractor, but the DuPont/PPG paint codes for pre 1949 tractors are 7410/70019, post 1949 DuPont 96766/71310.

The hardeners in acrylic urethane and MP182 surfacer (or the Nason equivalents) make a supplied air system essential. If you don't want to spend the 4-$500 for one -- well worth the price if you are going to paint several tractors -- you can use acrylic enamel without hardener, and change the MP182, which requires hardener, to MP181, which does not. The catalyst in the MP 170 epoxy does not contain isocyates.

Never buy paint from an auto parts, or tractor dealer. Go to a wholesale paint supply, where the auto body shops buy their paint. If they won't sale to you wholesale, then have your body man pick you up a gallon. No way would I pay 400.00 for a gallon or red paint.

Somebody is stiffing you.Red is one of,if not THE most expensive color, but $400 for a gallon? Thats $100 a quart! With activator and thinner I could see $400,but not just for the color.

I use CIH 2150 paint with hardener. Its alot better than the farm store paint and will result in a nice looking paint job if you do the surface prep correctlly. Also its not to costly, I bought a gallon of it yesterday from my local CNH dealer for about $40.

Just use a cheap acrylic it wil gloss up just as good and spend whats left over from not using a two pot on a good roof over the old girl to stop the UV light from fading it IMHO
If you can get a primer with zinc in it as it will reduce rustng especially on the mud guards. You are right its the foundation work thats most important.
That 2 pot stuff is real poisonous too!
