I started perusing this board about 6 months ago and at that time found it to be quite informative, interesting, and very polite. Almost 100% of the posts were polite even when the thread may have been off topic or the question was one that many of us might call a simple question.

Even though the vast majority of the threads here still are great, I have found the past three weeks on this board particularly frustrating. Authors of threads that are off topic (and so marked) but many find to be interesting are being blasted. Forbid it that someone should post even a hint that they are looking for or have something for sale or they are rudely reprimanded for breaking the rules by the “forum Gestapo.” Particularly frustrating to me was when one responder this week did his best to correctly answer the question in the thread only to get jumped on for doing a disservice. The disservice was that there was another (supposedly better) solution for the problem in the question that he failed to mention, even though the question did not ask for alternative solutions and only eluded to the problem.

I’m now afraid to express an opinion about how to fix something for fear that if I recommend what might be the best way I will come across as a multi-millionaire trying to coax others into spending lots of money when there is a cheaper fix (even though it might be lower in quality and dependability). If I suggest an inexpensive “try and get by” fix with “bubble-gum and bailing wire” then I’m a penny-pincher that has all the time in the world to do things over and over again if my fix doesn’t hold. If I start a thread by posting a picture of something I have I’m bragging, but if I never start a thread I’m just someone waiting to pounce when someone is wrong.

For me this forum has degraded to the point that I’m loosing interest in it very quickly (please keep in mind that there may be others reading it that feel the same way). I can deal with off topic threads and an occasional item listed for sale in the discussion forum a lot easier (just don’t expand them) than responses by those of you that can’t seem to restrain your comments to constructively addressing the subject of a thread (be it off topic or not). If you don’t agree with a response to a thread, offer up your suggestion and let the person that started the thread make the decision as to his finances, time, capabilities, etc. and he can then act accordingly. If a thread is inappropriate here, one response politely stating that should suffice. My wish is that we all settle down and refrain from bantering and bashing one another and get back to politely discussing the ideas and topics that have made this a great forum and stop the bantering and smart remarks that serve no purpose.

By the way, for those of you that are muttering at me “if you don’t like it here, leave” all I will say is “be careful what you wish for”. End of sermon.

Just a polite suggestion to all you fine folks, you might want to refrian frm using Novel Idea Guys initials in your posts refering to him.some on here may take offence to those initials.I am a black man,and although dont post often enjoy this site and my old Farmals, and would hate to see some of my fellow Farmall lovers stop frequenting his site due to nonintentional racisist remarks.I personally didnt take any offense to it,but a new poster may not understand.

That's why you don't see many post's from me anymore. Perhaps a simple question ( I am still in fear of being told how dumb I am), or a response that can't be contradicted without someone else showing their limited knowledge about that particular subject. I come on here about once every two weeks or so. When I first started it was every day. Hope things will change, but doubt seriously it will.

Generally speaking I feel that majority of the responses on this board are helpful. Like Ron in Nebr said and I quote "if ya can't say something nice....". If we could all just live by these words. Like they say "Opinions are like a**holes, everyone has one". I just want see all of them. I do disagree with the philosophy that it is ok to bash someone just because I may have had a bad day. Hopefully those individual can calm down a little and take a deep breath before berating someone or something.

I think that a big Kudos or atta-boy-girl should go out to Kim for maintaining this high quality discussion board. I have responded politely when somebody blatently tries to sell something on this board. I don't feel that have been disrespectfull when I have done this.

Let's keep up the good discussions on here and make a good impression for those who are new to this board. I have never been embarrassed to post my messages as Randy in NE and I always try to uncover my e-mail address because I have gotten some responses off-line and I thank those individuals. Sometimes it is better to be "lucky" than "good". It looks like they are in decent shape. A little sanding and then some nice new paint. But then will you have to paint the whole tractor to match the new paint on the tin????

Hi Randy,

I think I can match 'em up pretty good. I'm not doing the paint on the tractor; the boys are doing that in town at the local red shop.

But, I've got the same paint they do. :>)

Derned things were a little expensive, but it is better than looking at that big gapping hole in the side of the tractor. :>)

captain: On numerous ocasions over the past 5 years I have felt much the same as you do. Now, has it only been 6 months, gosh I could have sworn you had been around much longer. I always enjoy yout posts, have never seen you give anyone bad information or advice. It is rather difficult on here to always give excellent advice. Until you get a feel of just how mechanically inclined the guy receiveing the advice is, going to do it himself or does he have to hire it done. Then there is the guy that gives half enough information and when you ask for more he never responds.

I really don't think you should leave, it will get better. It runs in cycles, we have had this before, it rears it's ugly head every 6 months to a year, then they go away. You do need a much thicker skin. Sure there will be guys disagree with you, most of them you ignor, with some you try and explain yourself just a bit better or at least in terms he understands. Then sometimes there is just no way around it, you got to take a strip off someone. Some will disagree, maybe even you, but that is just how it is. No point in holding back, it's just what some guys need.

So stick around, it will get better. Like you I don't get awfully concerned about the ocasional add showing up in discussions. One matter creating a lot more confusion the past while back, is photos on discussion that should be going to the photo gallery, 9 catergories there now, should just about cover everything, and there is much discussion going on over there.

Captaink, its just like you just said, its the 1% that can put a bad light on this forum. Having supervised approximately 40 people for 24 years, I've learned that you'll get more cooperation treating them with respect and I think thats true of forums. I've worked for an IH dealership from 1974 to 1978 and thought I knew alot about IH tractors and machinery, but have learned so much more since visiting this forum. I've enjoyed the people and their views and opinions at this forum and it does remind me of the patrons at the local coffee shop. From time to time people do have a difference of opinion, but I think most of us are mature enough to roll with the "punches".
Well I'll get down off my soap box before I fall off. Thanks again to Kim and YT Magazine and all the participants of this forum.

I think that oil in the newer cars should be changed every 3,000 - 3,500 miles.

If you have a big V-8 in your truck, you can push that to about every 5,000 miles.

Use 10w30 quality brand oil.

Use 30wt in your tractor if you work it in the summer.

I joined this board about 2 months ago, and my first impression was that it was populated by a large group of mature, responsible, hard working types that didn"t have a chip on their shoulders. VERY different from some other boards I have been part of, where you could get stepped on for just about any reason.

Lately, I have noticed some negative comments, and it is disheartening. But, if the majority of us stay civil, we should be able to influence the board conduct, and continue to get a bunch of good information.

I think this board is, to the largest part, very informative and entertaining.

Captaink,If you are refering to the way N.I.G.
answered me in another post I have to admit it made me hot at first.I felt like giving him an answer, but after some thought I decided anything I
said would not change his mind or atitude,so there was no reson to tie up board in argument.
Also im not a good judge of wheather he was right
or wroung, since I make mistakes lots of times. He was right about a few things.I could of told the fellow exactly where to buy a shaft and which Case IH parts man to talk to if he wanted one from IH or aftermarket. But since YT is furnishing this site I don't want to be making recomondations on where to buy parts here.To end this only you fellows know how we come across on here.If others besides N.I.G.Think im doing people a disservice answering on here then I apoligize and will refrain. Thanks all

Great post Captaink. I have noticed the same thing to some degree. There are a few on this board who must suck lemons for breakfast and who think that they somehow have earned the right to be crass and harsh with their posting as well as seeming to think that their boorishness is either folksy, humorous or uniquely qualified to ride rough shod over others.

It is surprising sometimes in life whether it be a message board or the people you run into occasionally what takes the place of a helpful hand or common courtesy. If one ever has occasion to dig deeper into the background of these "know it all" scrooges one invariably encounters some sort of bitter, damaged or scarred personality for whatever reason. They expect to be treated harshly and their mind correspondingly just defaults to treating others the same way. The old saying of "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." could stand to be given a spring cleaning and tried out in some peoples lives.

WOW do I like it when someone tells people to p--ss off! It is a lot of fun reading through this lot of listings and see what you find. People get so up tight and stomp all over others who know a little bit of how to fix something. Do you remember when you only knew a LITTLE bit? Guess not. I DO know everything and you better remember that!:> HA HA If you want a real trip try working in a union shop. Day crew is six guys night shifts are one guy. EVERY TIME one of the night guys puts an entry in the log book, the day morons go and do a little sabotage. This has been reported to the union and management. Nobody cares or does anthing. Night crew just doesn't use the book anymore. If it hits the fan down the road we get yelled at for NOT useing the book. Yes the union covers for the IDIOTS and GOOFS and I must be in the union for this job. Make $31.25 per hour and after pension save plan etc. take home almost $22per. It is a comfortable Hell sometimes. There that is my little beef Jeffcat

Don’t worry about spelling or grammar as long as you get your message across. By the way, I’m one of the worst spellers around, but I use a handy little tool called Word to type my responses in. It checks spelling and grammar for me, then I just do a , (selects the text I just typed in Word) (Cuts the selected text from word) to the forum board, click in the reply message box and (pastes the selected text in the forum box) and I come off looking a whole lot better than if I just type it in myself. :>)

You're so right captian. In my opinion, what this board is supposed to be is a place for a group of people with common interests to talk amongst themselves. Basically a virtual cyber coffee-shop atmpsphere where both regulars and newcomers alike, all sharing one common interest in red iron(or grey or yellow or whatever color your IH is) can get together and feel free to talk or just listen in if they'd rather. Although this isnt the place for political or religious debates or anything controversial of that nature, as long as the chatter back and forth is friendly there shouldn't be too many limits(within reason). The top of the screen says this is a "Discussion Board", not a "tech board".

Maybe you guys should follow some of your own advice.

If a forsale or wanted ad pops up in the wrong place, and you don't want to see the nasty replies, DON'T READ IT. The guy that posted the ad sure ain't readin' the replies. People like that are one-off posters, just here for the free ad. They don't care, and neither should you.

If someone offers advice that doesn't directly answer the question, so what? Maybe they're doing what you do, offering an OPINION? They've got just as much right to their opinion as to what's the best fix as you do to yours. Just because their opinion differs from yours doesn't mean that theirs is wrong, bad, or posted with malicious intent.

Loosen up a little.

Amen Duane. Sometimes I think N.I.G. was one of TheRealRon's pupils. Way too serious. If ya don't know, don't answer. By reading the O.T.'s I think we all learn something new from them. Might be something that comes down the pike that we never thought of before, but gives a new way of looking at things. And indeed this is a discussion forum. I for one am glad of the various posts so I don't get bored learning the correct torque specs of the head bolts on the 1946 SHTAD or the correct plug gap of the ETD or the ,..... oh well, you get the idea. Writing a little nasty on here is sure better than yelling at your kids. Many of the nasty's here are even followed by apologies (of sorts).

But for a bunch of guys who pride themselves on working on old tractors and scraping their knuckles every now and then we can sure be sensitive.

I'll tell you what, I have been to those local coffee shops, this forum can't hold a candle to some of the ribbing I've seen take place at the coffee shop. These forums on YT are still the absolute best coffee shop in town, bar none.

Rusty, you're completely right about the ribbing. But how often at the local cofee shop do you see things get so personal and mean-spirited that one of the "rib-ees" decides to never come back again? I've seen that happen before when it comes to internet forums, and I value dang near each and every post from dang near everyone here, whether it's an old familiar name or someone asking their first question. If only everyone would live by the old saying "if ya can't say something nice...."
