hi, i have about 40 acres out in western NY and i need a tractor to mow it with. I am going to be useing a brush hog so i fugured i needed something with a good amount of power. I had a farmer useing the land but he went out of bussiness. It hasent been mowed for a year and since we did have someone farm the grass is very tall.I am looking at a International 300 with loader. The ad says" international 300,widefront end,w/loader,needs minor work. $2300" i was wondering if this is a good price and if this tractor will get the job done Thanks,Emil

Emil: I think I'd go with the ideas of renting the land for hay or other crop production. If your land is reasonably accessable for larger machinery and in close proximity to other land being farmed, in WNY state you should have no problem putting the value of that 300 in your pocket every year.

Now if you want to play a bit, keep out couple of acres, maybe a corner that would not be physically viable for a tennant with large equipment. Then get a suitable tractor to play with. and have 38 acres pay for your hobby.

Another matter some of these guys mowing production figures, they must have a good shade tree.

Its just amazing...whenever work needs to get done, there is always a 300U around to get it done! Thank goodness they made many...unfortunately they really didnt make ENOUGH...seems everybody wants one today.
Hear that Case/IH? Put these babies back in production(everything original design),sell them for around $3000 and you'll sell a million!!
LOL
Of course,CNH would go bankrupt just on the steel price loss....

I would run an add and see if ya can sell the grass and buyer harvest,or at least let some one harvest it for hay at no cost. Unless you really have a hankering for a new hobby or have too much cash try to make it profitable or at least avoid investment just to mow. If it is no good for hay, how bout pasture if it is fenced. Explore all options that make financial sense

Nobody's mentioned it yet, but to me $2300 seems a bit high for a 300 that needs work, although if the loader is a nice one that should offset it some. How far you have to go to pick it up is a factor to.

Probably not too many in that area, but a trail mower, with two 7 or 9 foot sickle bars, would be what I would look for, unless that "tall grass" is really a mess and has little trees and shrubs coming up in it(wouldnt think so after only a year without being mowed). We pulled two 7's behind a Super H for years with no problems, so that 300 could handle it easy. In these parts, the only thing a "brush hog" is used for is mowing tight spots like around newly planted trees in shelterbelts. Oh, and the county uses 'em to mow the ditches too I guess. In other words, if you plan to mow something with more ground than the average yard around the outbuildings, you'd be better off getting more mower.

Unless of course you already have the brushhog and don't mind taking the time to use it.

Emil,

I might be the odd man out on this one, but if I had 40 acres to cut, I sure wouldn't be doing it with a little 5 or 6’ bush hog.

I'd be looking for a 100 hp tractor and a 16-foot swather. 40 acres is a fair amount of grass to be knocking down.

Just my 2¢

Allan

Using a 6' shredder behind a 300 on 40 acres is a days job, even if you are just loafing it.

Either that's one long day, or you're mowing in road gear... Wow. 20 acres with a 12' haybine at 6-7MPH in an afternoon (4hrs) is a pretty tall feat on WNY ground.

BTW, where you located in WNY? Might be able to find you a farmer to work the land rather than leave it fallow.

Only takes us about 3.5 hours to mow 21 acres with a 9 foot mower.

Well yes,

When I was a boy, I used to run an old JD 50 with a 9' cutter bar on a #8 mower. 15 or 20 acres was a pretty big day goin' round and round and round. :>)

When operating an H with a 7' mower bar my old man would have had my *** then my head if I only mowed 20 acres in day. With 7 brothers there was plenty of other "operators" to take over for somebody that wasn't cutting it, and plenty of shovel work for that person when they got off the tractor. Then you had to listen to him tell you story about how he could do it faster with horses then you could with a tractor. So I guess some people are just more prone to get something done with the right motivation.

I do agree that the price on the 300 is a kinda high, especially for one that needs work.

I use to mow 45 acres in one day with a five foot 6 inch PZ 165 double drum mower for silage on a fergie 135 start at 8 and finishing at abot 6 PM, 20 years ago one and a half tanks of diesel. All flat land 4 fields in 3 high @ 1800 rpm
Sickle bar mowers are too complex for most people including me and they are not good at chopping up fence posts or stones.
But mowing it is not to wise I would look at grazing that land with 30 weaner steers bought in early spring after ring fencing with an electric 2 wire fence and sell them before the winter, if it was me and put in a loading ramp race and small 50 square metre yard more relaxing and bucolic.

No offense meant here but what's complex about a sickle-bar mower??? They're what the original horse mowers were. Just a sickle going back and forth, and in this case driven by a wobblehead that's driven by a pulley that's driven by a belt hooked to another pulley driven by the pto shaft. I mowed with and maintained a 7ft bar mower when I was 9 years old. Yeah, you gotta keep sickle sections in them, and ledger plates on the guards if you use that type, but that's a job accomplished with a hammer and punch, nothing complicated there.

I do agree that bar mowers wouldnt be suited for mowing where there's stub posts or rocks or other crud to hit but he said this feild was mowed two years ago, so it should be fairly clean. The IH-type bar mowers have a break-away feature on them anyway that will let the bar swing back if you hit something solid....and you can probally guess how I know that ;).

Comon now,

He says "tall grass"... To me, that means waist or chest high. I doubt if a 300 would even pull a 6' rotary cutter thru that.

Sure could be wrong tho; if we are talking about grass a foot tall, it would still be one heck of a long day to knock down 40 acres.

Unless someone has gone and changed the size of an acre when I wasn't lookin'. :>)

Here's roughly 14 or 15 acres of 'short' stuff.

We used to mow hay with a six foot Brillion rotary mower. In alfalfa about 2 feet tall I could run easily in 3rd gear with the Super H, about 5 MPH.... and get about three acres per hour cut. In grass a foot tall I could have run 4th gear, about 6-1/2 mph, and cut four to 4-1/2 acres/hour but the cutting job would have been no where near as nice. I think the 300 is plenty big. Depending on the steepness of the terrain I'd even consider a 7 or 8 ft cutter. 300 has plenty of slow gears, and the cutters do a much better job going slow than going fast.

the tractor should have no problem. what you would want to do is find out what the "minor work" is. if the engine is strong(no smoke or too many major leaks) the hydraulics are good on the loader and the 3 point and the pto is working well you should be in good shape and that's a fair price. of course i would try to get it as cheap as i could.

if your not sure, have a knowledgeable friend(engines don't matter what they come on they are all the same)go with you. sometimes your desire causes easy questions to slip your mind.

whtre in wny are you. i grew up there.

btw, with the loader it should help with the snow too!
