I just bought a Super H. The tractor has a steady knocking sound that I can hear when the tractor is in neutral and in reverse. Could this sound be caused by the clutch assembly?

Would appreciate ideas on where/how to pin point to start repairing this problem.

Good start with Allan's comment below. While its knocking in neutral go around it with a broom stick, long screwdriver etc. Hold one end of the stick etc. tight to your ear (with your thumb between it and your ear) probe the other end onto parts of the transmission, clutch housing etc. Where you find the noise to be the loudest will be closest to the location of the problem.

Super,

First step is, does the sound completely stop when you push the clutch?

Knocking stops when clutch is pushed In. in reply to Allan in NE, 03-03-2005 05:33:32
After listening more, their is a constant sound also besides the knocking that stops so I guess I will be splitting the super H and checking/replacing a bearing.

Thanks for the input.

Don't be too hasty to pull the Old Girl in two. Dad's M had a similar knock and it turned out to be the yolk on the transmission input shaft has split at the keyway and was loose. New Yolk and it's been fine ever since.... This was back in about 1968 or 1969. You didn't say if Your SH had the belly pump or not (Stage I or II) but the clutch should stop everything from turning in the transmission, and the pilot bearing is the most common thing to go wrong with them.
