Okay, I've got some really neat older IH literature from 1936. The literature is really interesting to read and explains how farmers are on a waiting list to recieve the tractors they ordered. It sounded like IH had one heck of a time getting tractors made in time. Also explains how IH has to hire more employees to make the tractors. My question for all of you historians. On the F-20 for sure, in 1935 the steering box cover was smooth. Why was it smooth for that year only? I'm guessing IH contracted some parts out to keep up with the demand of tractor sales. Being that part produced and was made smooth for quick production? You tell me.

Sprout, ya gotta realize, that 1933, and 34, was the worst of the Depression, and the few years later warnt much better. Farmers, those who didnt get sold out by then, and 3 outa every 4 farmers in 33 got sold out, hunkered down, and hung onto what they had. MANY parked there cars and went back to using the buggy and wagon. Many farmers burnt corn for heat cause the price wasnt worth selling it to buy coal;. NOW, if you WAS a farmer back then, ridding the fence on whether to buy a new tractor or not, how would reading the lititure that you said you read about the company barly being able to make enough tractors to supply the great demand, make you swing your vote. Like you said, advertising , can say alot, and yet not tell the whole truth

I would say the smooth cover change was probably due to manufacturing process. It is easier to bore the hole to put a bolt through than to tap thread and install a blind stud in the smooth casting.

I think the part about having to wait for a tractor may be a bit....embellished. In fact, IH virtually shut down tractor production on many models in 1934 (F-12 was a exception) because of high inventories and low sales.

Guy,

The accounts were noted in my 1936 Tractor Farming Magazine (Produced by IH). Obviously this is a great time to advertise a product. Interesting how they can say one thing but still be shutting down the plant. Never would of guessed, but advertising is a wonderful thing.
