Has any one had any dealings with the rotary screw air compressors? We have 2, 35 cfm 10 hp 3 phase piston pumps w/ 120 gal tanks from Ingersoll Rand. They provide air to our milking parlor and flush system. We now have one with a bad cylinder head. $2000 + labor to fix it. We had them hooked in a lead and lag set up but they seemed to be running all the time. We need 24/7 service out of the next one(s). I think we were under powered for our air needs at the time of installation (hind sight being 20/20) Any Input would be great!!

Thanks,

Butch

From an industrial standpoint, I would not have any other type of compressor. There is virtually no wear on a correctly maintained screw compressor. We have well over 40,000 hours on our 3 100 HP compressors. 1 under load, 1 on standby and 1 for rotation during servicing. However, these are not oil-less. I prefer a synthetic oil as recommended by the mfg.

Hi Butch,

I'm way behind the times, I guess. Mine (Surge) always used vacuum pumps to milk, retract and purge the delivery system.

How does your system work with air? Do the big herringbone setups all use air (for gates, etc) or do you use some kind of a proprietary system?

Thanks,

Allan

Allen,

We still have the vacuum pumps to draw the milk out of the cows. they are variable speed (on Demand type) the air compressors are for operating all of the gates in our double 20 parallel parlor as well as the holding area reduction gate. the second and maybe most important function is to keep the valves (air bags over covers) closed on our gravity flow alley flush system in the stall barn. As far as proprietary system, we have 2 120 gallon air tanks that are then fed to a drying system then are regulated out to where it is needed.

Here's that word again: Uff-da! You are one busy feller with a double 20!

Hope you find your compressors; and quick!

I have worked with large 600 to 1000 cfm Atlas-Copco ZR oil free units. I assume you would be looking for an oil free unit since you are handling milk. The Atlas-Copco units have been around for 35 years and have established a solid reputation for reliable service and oil free air. They usually need an inspection at about 35,000 hours of operation and rotor replacement at about 70,000 hours of operation. The new ZR series are available in small sizes of under 100 cfm also. I would definitely recommend the Atlas Copco oil free rotary screw compressor for anywhere potential oil contamination of the process product (milk) is a concern. I have ben involved in applications for breathing air and instrument air. These applications have prefilters, after filters, water traps, etc.
