I remember seeing an article a long time ago in Country Journal Magazine about plowing snow, although it was with a pickup. I should have read it more closely as I can make a mess in the driveway. It would be nice to have someone give some hands on pointers.

Mitch, that's why I like blowers, but...there should be a guide for them too.....I've seen people with a snowblower make a mess because they don't know how to use the wind to help them move the snow further, can't figure out a pattern to clear a yard without overlap or blowing back onto what they already did..then there's people who can't figure out a land for plowing or always have a wedge down the middle of a field, or crooked headlands...the point is they are not mechanically/spacially/hand-eye coordinated inclined and no manual will help them out..and I'm sick of blowing snow, at home with the walk behind and at the farm with the 584 and blower..more snow for tomorrow and the rest of the week, but that's the lea of Lake Huron for ya..Mike in Exeter Ontario

What? I thought all you had to do was drop the blade, put it in 5th, open the throttle, and jump the clutch???

A guide wouldn't help. They wouldn't read it, and if they did, they wouldn't understand a word of it.

Mitch: What the matter, someone making a IH tractor look bad. You could be the guide. Maybe he is some old guy like me, hoping your going to suggest you could show him how to do it, then he could sit by the fireside and watch you. If I see you up here on Cuddy Drive, that is what I'm going to do.

No not makin any tractor look bad, But it is a Newholland, 7840. And he ain't old, he's about 14. When I push snow I try and get it pushed back as far as possible, so if we get more there is room to put it, And i know i'm not the only one that thinks that cause are neighbour and several others have pushed us out this winter, and do the same thing. This person puts big piles in the middle of the yard(where veichles and tractors drive) Just v blades it to the side of the drive way, but it eventually builds up and you cant wing it anymore. Then, he goes about 20min away(tractor drive) To his dads rented finisher barn to scrape cause we had to load pigs this morning, Well guess where all the snow got piled? Right in front of the loading shute and feed tank. So now he has to go back and scrape it again so the Hensal CO-OP can deliver feed. And yes i have tried many times to Teach him How, but you know the saying Wooden Shoes Wooden Head Wooden listen. So i Just keep my mouth shut now. Maybe they have those manuals in Dutch?

Mitch: Maybe he just enjoys plowing snow, thus having to move it several times, gives him great pleasure. I'm thinking that 7840 is likely 4x4, he probably doesn't need as much space for the next snowfall as we guys with two wheel drive and under 50 hp.

Up in this area from London on down to Sarnia the Dutch don't even plow their snow. To much fun getting their wooden shoes full of snow, pushin, pullin and towing vehicles. Maybe they think it keeps salesmen, bureaucrats, and other annoying people away.

In the town of Strathroy, and I'm not sure this is accurate, but they claim population of around 13,000 is 1/3 Portuguese, 1/3 Dutch and the other 1/3 a mix of mostly British that came here 100-250 years ago. It is claimed you can tell from which group a resident comes by his or her snow removal. The Portuguse take snow removal to the point manicuring the property, the old group from Britain are average always plowed out but nothing fussy, while the Dutch plow it with the Cadilac deVille or wife's mini van. When it comes to summer and things green and growing it all reverses. The Dutch are the one's that get particular. This is not my opinion, I wont argue with it, but the opinion belongs to a long time resident.

So much for habits in mid western Ontario, now if the Dutch establishment don't send two guys in a black Lincoln, with tinted glass, over the Wooden shoes joke, we may get to meet up with you at some farm show somewhere this summer. Just kidding of course, Dutch actually take that one quite well, but they are quick to point out copper wire was invented by two Scotsmen fighting over a penny. With you Mitch, they will just use the Wooden shoes, in fact your mother should dig out a pair for you to wear to school tomorrow.
