iester : Your 350 has a dipstick because all IH after 100, 200, 300 qnd 400 had a dipstick as standard equipment. Your 350 was equpied with petcocks in the oil pan as someone wanted to burn distilate. In burning distilate, you must drain off unburnt fuel from your oil pan each morning after oil has settled to bottom. You then replace with fresh oil.

I read in the owners manual for an H that said on distillate models the owner should periodically drain oil level to lower petcock and refill to upper petcock with fresh oil to remove "watered" down oil. I"ve read other posts suggesting that "lightly" worked engines should be ran at lower level and "heavily" worked engines be ran at upper (don"t necessarily agree though). Hope that helps.

Sounds to me like you have an engine out of a combine, or a stationary engine, that has been mated up with the oil pan from the tractor engine. If you"re talking about an H or M, I don"t believe that any of the original engines had a dipstick. Someone else with more knowledge than me will probably jump in to help out. Larry

The check valves (petcocks) were supposedly only on the distillate/kerosene tractors. Still had a dipstick though. They were for draining off excess fuel/condensation from pan. Someone stated this above I think. We've only had one 300/350 with the pan for petcocks. It has plugs in the pan, all the rest of them have no provision for the petcocks. yours could also have been swapped for an H pan.
