Is there an adjustment on the pump for the pto on the 706? The new engine is slipping the pto, bout when it gets to 540, should I expect to rebuild the pto, or is it in the pto pump? Has new oil in it, Yes, it is Hytrans. The HP before it gets to 540, is around 85, (bout 600-610 on the dyno) It seems pretty stout for a 263. I did rework the carb, and that helped it a lot, before, the plugs were lean, or white in color, that told me the carb was not giving it enough fuel under a load. So, I eliniated the electric shut off, and installed a manual adjustment screw. Went up 5 jet sizes, it woke up! it went from 75hp, up to 80-81 at 600-610 pto rpm. Then I reset the timing and tried a 540 dyno pull, it started to hit 85, then 86, pto was around 585, then I took it down to 540, pto slipped, so I stopped it immediatly. Engine was overpowering the pto, the dyno was overpowering the pto. Dad was telling me that he had readjusted the pto on his 856 and it helped it alot. So, just wondering what to do in this case,, ChadS

Where the linkage enters the PTO unit, there's an adjustment for the hydraulic pressure applied to the clutches. A couple times over the years, this has vibrated loose on Dad's 856 and caused it to slip under load. Worked fine up until you really started pouring the ensilage into the blower, then it'd slip and plug the silo pipe. Dad would readjust it, and everything would be fine.

This might be the same problem you're having.

Well if it slipped then more then likly it is TO LATE . THere is a port that you install aspecial fitting and attach a gauge to and you adjust the lock up pressureby truning the valve stem up into the nut where the linkage goes , there should be a locknut on the valve stem and a small hole that you can place a small nail in to turn the stem with . You can buy that fitting from Csae I H about 30 bucks and ya need to get the o/ring also. If the clutch pack is shot the when you rebuild it go with the 7 and 9 set up and set your pressure at 265 to 280 ya won't slip it there the stock setting is down around 210 but i like to set it up . You will need a gauge that will read atleast 600 lbs for this test .

Better listen to the doc on yer pto press setting. One thing if you ever decide to take the piston out when you take yer clutch pack out watch out for the spring in that thing. Best to have a IH dealer do it or someone that doesknow how. Saw a guy get 25 stiches when he tried to take the snap ring off of that thing. Doc is right on all counts!!

Little more info on the description of how it slipped, it never stopped spinning, you could let off the dyno, or back off the engine and it would grab back up and hold, long as I did not open up the throttle all the way, and then pull it down to 540. It sounded like the pump was was giving up, more than hearing the disks grind, I cant imagine that old sick engine being much of a terror on the pto, but who knows? start turning up the ponies on them, and may start to have to go farther than what is to be expected to keep it together and hope it holds. Im looking into geting a guage, and the fitting, but reading the shop manual to get a grasp of what Im up against. I did have Dad show me how to adjust it, and it did help it, but, who knows? may have just tightened up the pressure on a worn out clutch pack,,,,, , did not slip at 540 this time, but what about later??? Made 90 hp, out of a bone stock 263, so yes tractor vet, I belive you on what they can do! Got some unexpected HP out of it, I thought it would be round 75,,, shocked the heck out me! Now, rebuild, or see if it holds,,,,, ,, Im betting on rebuild,,,, darn it! LOL!! Have a good nite fellas! Thanks for all your help! Im sure Ill have more questions! ChadS

Chad,

If it is pulling thru that PTO, sounds like you are in need of a set of clutches.
