I have a neighbor with a 1086 that leaves the whole hood section off. Been that way for years. I never cared for the way it looked, but I guess it's his tractor to do with as he pleases.

Agree that there was no excuse for cutting hole but engineer who designed tractor that must have hood removed to service air cleaner must have been undecover John Deere employee. Dad jumped to Massey Ferguson in sixtys because nieghbor and good friend was dealer the Masseys had air clraner in about same place but had neat little spring loaded door to sevice them.

Aw,

IH filters in these things have a whirlpool flow and the unloader. So, how often does a fellow have to service 'em? Once or maybe twice a year at the most? I sure wouldn't jump ship to a Massey over those four little bolts.

Although, I will admit, they are kinda a pain when you're really busy and in a hurry. :>)

Dunno,

Allan

Did not mean that the air cleaner had any thing to do with going to Massey but I do think it was a poor design. It might have been overkill but we seviced air cleaner at least once a week in dusty conditions.

NDS,

IH says (said) to stay outta the thing until the indicator trips.

They say that more dirt can enter the engine just from the act of opening and closing the door (act of changing the filters) than thru those two filters themselves.

Dunno,

Allan

Somebody did the same thing to my 43 H so the power steering pump would fit. If that wasn't enough they put a IH BUS steering wheel on the tractor. The only cool thing is the IH emblem on the wheel.

Allan, What I can't fathom is someone who has a tractor like this, doesn't own, or is too cheap to go to a pawn shop and spend $2.00 for a 9/16 wrench!
OH!...Please deposit $.50 in the Coffee Can there on the desk. LOL
Later,
John A.

You are right! The hole should have been round with a chrome trim ring and the tractor painted Oliver green and white. Now that would have added some class.

The guy thought it was starving for fresh air thru those tiny louvers and all it could draw was hot engine air from underneath so he cut that big hole to feed that thing some cooler fresh air when it was up on the turbo.

Allan;
You're going to need a bigger jar if you follow your own rule from a couple days ago...but on second thought, "equine whip" just doesn't sound the same!

"Allan's New Rule!!
I'm gonna set a jar out here on the desk. Every time somebody utters the word "horse" they gotta put a quarter in the jar. Now, the price goes up to 50 cents if it is said in conjunction with my name."

At least it has smooth edges. I have a hole in the nose cone of my JD430 over the steering box so you could check oil level in it without taking the loader off, it was cut with a torch and is really nasty.

I have to agree. Why would anyone think they needed to do that? Why would anyone think they needed to cut a chunk out of the hood on an M or H to make an alternator fit? The worst part about that 1066 is what did they accomplish?

Just beause it took too darned much time to R&R 4 little bolts to get to that air cleaner once in awhile.

Bet he dropped the resale value $2K, as this just points to the question, "What is the rest of the tractor like?".

I swear, I don't like this "throw-away" thinking. I think we are getting way too soft.

on my 966 i cut a hole to access the air filter.
i bought a metal cover that goes over the hole and is held on by two bolts. i don't feel like i did anything wrong by making it easier to access the air filter.
