What's the big advantage of the alternator over the generator other than repairs? My 560 Diesel has a generator which works just fine but was wondering if I will gain anything with a conversion?

Lance - I agree with the others. If the existing generator keeps the batteries up, leave it alone! Only when it gives trouble consider replacing it.

Advantages of an alternator over a generator: Cheaper to buy/replace. Requires less maintenance. Higher output at governed speed (good if you have extra lights, etc). Provides output at low speed (good if your tractor spends a lot of time idling).

Better regulation with an alternator too, Bob. With the correct voltage going to your battery, it will last longer. Much longer.

Lance: If it's working well don't touch it. When the generator packs it in then definately I'd go with an alternator. At that point the old generator could cost $150. for rebuild. Most guys around here with 6 cylinder diesels are going to auto wreckers picking up a GM delco for $25. On the first one you will need to fabricate a mount for alternator. Ocasionally you will find new alternators at auto parts stores for $40.

So it's all about money when the time comes. The alternator will give much better service especially if you are using a lot of lighting. Personally I would go with 2 wire, I use an excite switch and problems are nil. I know little about the 1 wire systems, other than the growling I hear about them.

If it's working fine for you, then leave it. When the generator goes bad, swap it out for a one-wire alternator.
