I'm ashamed to ask this, but I'm at my wits end. I can't find the oil dipstick or filler tube on our "new" Farmall M (1951). The service manual has lots of information, but they seem to have left this out -- unless I'm just overlooking it.

Bill, from your alias, looks like you might live in Ohio. If so, where? I live a little northeast of Dayton.

I live just outside of Middletown, George.

Good thing I asked about the oil, btw. It was 2.5 quarts low. After opening both petcocks, I filled until oil ran out of the lower, then closed that one and added another quart or so.

When I opened the upper petcock, it did commence to dripping a bit. I left it open to clear out whatever overfill might be there (and hung a wrench off of it, so I wouldn't forget to close it).

Here's a picture of "Big Red":

I like that combination of black and red, gives it a personality all its own. Only thing it needs is a toy John Deere placed inside the air cleaner jar.

Rusty you might like the purple M for sale in the photo ads. Me, i'm partial to IHC's paint schemes -- except the 300/400 -- but they corrected them with the white on 350/450. My nickel Dick Davis

Ronald answered your question, and it is in the operator's manual, with pictures.

Steve: He did say service manual, and I'm betting if it is an IT manual, that one probably doesn't say. Yes I agree the operators manual will.

You probably didn't see Jim's advice before posting. If you do get oil running out the top petcock, let it all run out. Farmalls are very sensitative to being over full. They pop crank seals quite easily. I never fill a Farmall to the full mark, been doing this for 45 years. 1/4" below full mark is close enough, doesn't matter whether it's petcock or newer one's with dipsticks.

Bill, that is not a dumb question if you have never been around them you wouldn"t know. The two petcocks on the side of the oil pan, oil should run out of the bottom one, but not the top one. Be sure to open them all the way.

Scotty, I heard some one at the cafe say it was going get down to 19 tonight, with a posibility of some snow or sleet. I hadn"t ck. the weather since yesterday, and it changes every few mins here. One of the old sayings in the midwest is if you don"t like weather stick arould 10 mins. We have had a very mild winter so far, I have seen a lot of snow in March, but not the bitter cold of Jan and Feb. I think I was a Senior in High School, the last week of Feb it snowed and every 3 or 4 days after that. We had snow on the ground until April 5. Most kids look foward to snow days, but it meant I was going to feed a couple of hundred bales of hay that day.

There is no dipstick, there are two pitcocks on the side of the oil pan. Oil should run out the top pitcock. There is a large cap on the Dist. side of the engine between the dist. and the fan to put oil in.
