I can"t remember which discussion board has had postings on stolen tractor, but I was wondering if this wouldn"t help? If someone had serial numbers to post, folks could keep an eye out for such tractors. With many spring auctions - consignment/and others, maybe someone could get there iron back. Just a thought.

Al: While I agree with the policemen here, another good spot to leave that serial number and I suspect police do this is with dealers. Parts guys will quite often ask for serial numbers, suggesting they need it to make sure part is right, when in actual fact they are spoting a stolen tractor. The danger with this is most states and provinces have never maintained a registry for tractors, and couple that with fact guy in the business on making replacment tags have not been careful enough on making sure they are correct.

Of course the other factor in here is smart thieves never sell whole tractors, just parts. Serial numbers a gone quite quickly.

Believe it or not, I'm actually a police officer/detective in real life and play with old iron as a hobby (Big stress reliever). I think a serial number post would be a good idea. However, to really help the police agencies locate you stolen tractor, have the serial number wrote down. The agency will put the serial number in a national computer system (LEADS). Any officer that checks the serial number of the tractor will then know that it is stolen. You would be surprised how many people do not know their serial numbers. When I buy something of value it almost always comes with a manual. Write the serial number down in that manual and store it in your office. Bad guys never seem to steal manuals and books ;)

Sprout,

What state and agency are you from? I didn't think there were many of us on here. My e-mail is unlocked.

Good idea, I had a Farmall B stolen last year and I watch every ad, tractor show and auction.

The same site could be used for guys looking for their old tractor they grew up on.
