I would very much appreciate some advice on my tractor. WEnt to change my oil for spring and i found i had a very little bit of antifreeze in the bottom of the oil pan. I left the oil out of the pan for a week. and found about a tee spoon in the pan. I remove the pan and pressure test cooling system and seen 2 drips of coolant at the bottom of the number 3 and 4 cylinder sleeves. Could not tell from piston side or outside of sleeve. Tractor has 6100 hrs and little smoke at start up then clears right up in a minute. runs great. I do not want the coolant to ruin bearings. thanks all your help is greatly appreciated Trent

Probably leaking past the o-rings around the outside of the sleeves. That's pretty common with these older German diesels. With the amount of work involved to remove the sleeves, you're almost better off just overhauling the whole engine. Remember, it is just short of 40 years old, even if it runs great, it will run/start even better after an overhaul. Don't run it like it is, it only had a couple drips when you pressure tested it cold, but it will really start leaking when you get a full load on it.

Thanks I pulled head off and had it checked. No cracks few bad ex valves. I'm having that rebuilt. Checked the sleeves for wear only found there were .001 wore. manual says there useable up to .006 wore. i pulled off some main caps and bearings look great. I might just replace orings rebuilt head and reseal motor. Whats your opinion?? thanks again

Got her split? If so, I'd at least roll in new main bearings (can't get the rear main bearing cap off until you remove the rear main seal housing). Carfully measure your rod journals, too. I guess if it were mine and I was that far into it, I'd pull it all the way down, take a good look at the camshaft, have the crankshaft checked, have the injection pump and injectors tested, and put it back together with the high compression pistons.

I'm to the part where i'm removing the sleeves to see whats really going on for sure. I have one piston out and the sleeve does not want to move. The book tells you to use a block of wood and bump it out. There is hardly enough room to get anything in let a lone wood. I'm thinking maybe a long aluminium punch. cast sleeves or steel because cast would possibly break. Also because of the shape of the rods you have to un bolt the rod cap and bottom of piston stroke and rotate to top of stroke to clear the crank. At least thats what i did to remove the first piston. any help would be apppreciated. thanks
