454 charging problem

I have a 454 IH utility with alternator and internal regulator. I have close to 14.0 volts going to the battery which is the same as the output at the alternator.

My problem is I am not getting any amperage showing on the amp meter on tractor. Amp meter shows slight discharge when I turn on the switch, so I have to believe the amp. gage works.

I have cleaned the terminals.

Any advice on what I should do will be appreciated.

Hi N8Terry, the 454 originally had a generator.
Did you do the alternator conversion? I know on my brothers 454 when we converted to a Delco alternator, the simplest solution was to run a new wire to the battery connection on the starter bypassing the voltage regulator and amp meter circuits. The amp meter only shows discharge when switch or lights are turned on.

Could this be your problem ?

Good luck

Is the battery fully charged? Check the electrolyte in each cell. These readings should be close to one another should read from 1250-1275
on a fully charged battery. The output voltage of 14 volts is good. I think that's normal for an amp meter to show a slight discharge when the ignition is turned on. If you do not have to add water to the battery often, I think your charging circuit is ok. Hal
