Well guys, I tore into the H today. Took off one side and looked at the brake bands. Clean as cool be. They looked practically like brand new. So I decided that I would dig a little deeper with my dad. Well, when I took the top cover off I was the worst thing I had ever seen. I realized that this tractor that I had purchased that had been, according to the owner "sitting in the barn," had been full of water at one point. That is why the rear wheels wouldn't turn. So, now I have a Farmall H that has every gear and bearing in the rearend and tranny in no shape to run. I guess I could disassemble it completely, but I'll still have to get all new bearing. I really don't want to know how much that is going to cost. Any donor H tractors in Texas??

I would start by disassembling the entire rear end. Often times you can get individual parts loose that won't turn when they're together. If you clean the gears and splined shafts the best you can and get the bearings moving and then put it back together with new gear oil, it will run for you. If any parts are real bad (severely pitted), they should be replaced.
One more thing, it is best to just drive on the level for a little bit in each gear at first. It will help to minimize load on the bearings while the gear teeth are polishing themselves.

Colekicker, I might get booed off the forum for this but here goes.I would drain and clean the rear end up and fill it with fresh oil. Then I would use it as a normal tractor. My experience is that rust will wear off of a gear tooth pretty quick and although it may look ugly it will still work. I told you about one of my H's having almost two and a half gallons of water in it. I drained and flushed it and filled it with new oil. For the first while there was a kind of throb sound from the rear which I believe was the rusty half of the bull gear going through a revolution. After drivingthe tractor down the highway a few miles and back it seemed quieter. I use the tractor around the farm and have noticed no noise, nor any problem with the rear end. I have not had to replace any bearings either..they will polish up too with use. Your H is not poor for a first tractor, H's and M's get water in the rear if they sit outside any length of time. I wouldn't hesitate to flush, fill and drive it, don't make work and expense for yourself when all it will cost you is a pail of gear oil... best of luck and give it a try...Mike in Exeter Ontario

I'll take some pictures today. No way this is gonna turn. When we winched it onto the trailer, the tires compeltely drug. Its pretty bad.

Thats a bummer! But dead H's are not hard to come by for a couple hundred bucks. Find another and take the best parts to make one. Don't get discouraged, it's all part of the fun. I think you could get a new rear-end from the clutch back for the same price at a wrecker. I've seen farmalls outside for 40 years and the they didn't fill up the gear-box. How did the water get in?
