Finally worked on the tractors we bought today. Didn"t go so hot. Managed to drain the gas and change the oil in the Cub, B, & Super C. The B needs major work. The Super C pours gas from the air intake of the carb so I didn"t get a chance to start it. The Cub actually started up pretty easily. Everything was going well on the Cub, but it will just shut off like the ignition switch was turned off. There is no fuel line blockage, the sediment bowl is clean, the inside of the carb was clean as well. I left it running for about 20 minutes before it died the first time. Sometimes it will crank right back up, others it wont. I cleaned the carb out as well. I"m starting to think its something electrical. Could this be a coil problem? Any thoughts?

Also a BIG pain with the B and Super C is the oil filter. When I pull the housing off, they both had no rubber gasket. I put the rubber gasket down in the grove and tightened it up, but it leaks. The gasket is very narrow. The filters came from the dealership. Should I just throw the rubber gaskets away?

The Cub is a 6V system still. I was surprised that all of the tractors were still 6V still. I'll replace the condensor first because the coil still looks new (even though it hasnt ran in years). It'll be another month before I get to work on them because the tractors are 2+ hours away and I don't go back to TN but once a month. Overall the tractor ran good. Smokes some out of the breather and just a lil big out of the exhaust. Even got to use the plow while I was playing around.

The Cub has a distributor.

I would do as Wayne has suggested with the condenser. If it still stops after running for a short time I would replace the coil. Was this Cub converted to 12 volts? A defective ballast resistor that drops the voltage to the ignition will cause this problem too. Hal

Take sharp, pointed tool & remove the old gasket from the oil filter base. The old gaskets are hard to see; be sure to dig it out completely.
A new gasket will not leak if properly installed.
Check the condition of the points; replace them & the condenser if at all in doubt. You could also check for a loose wire connection causing the shutdown problem.

Yeah, I found a gasket in there too. Resorted to making a narrow chisel out of an old screwdriver blade and removing the gasket by chiseling it out. Old gasket was hard, and was quite a job to get out.

I have had the same problem with the oil filter seating correctly on my 140 a bunch of times. It usually takes a couple of tries before it seats right and doesn"e leak. You have to really get the old gasket out completely or it won"t seat. Dave
