Whats this M worth?

Looked at a 1946 Farmall M with a factory widefront (yes I know the difference between a factory and a schwarz and this one has the tie rod ends forward in front of the axle) The tie rod ends had alittle bit of play in them, but not too bad. The steering however is very very sloppy and I really don't think I'd care to go down the road in road gear with it!. The gearshift is also very sloppy and it's hard to determine where neutral is. The owner tells me it was used for logging before he got it about 6yrs ago and it has sat ever since, he never used it, he isn't sure it still runs anymore, it was when it was parked, and the exhaust has been covered by a raincap on the muffler the entire time and it has been outdoors. Unsure if the engine is stuck or not as the fan belt is loose and the wheels are froze to the ground as it is winter here. It has an extremely hideous paint job that did more harm than good toward restoration. one rear tire looks like new, but it has been sitting so long I'm wondering if it doesn't have a rotten spot where it has made contact with the ground all these years, the other 3 are really rotten. All the lights are missing. the PTO seal leaks. The seat, and seat bracket have been broken and rewelded, and theres also a bunch of weld on the exhaust manifold. Sheet metal isn't too bad, but not perfect, lots and lots of cleanup and paint prep to do to get off all that ugly paint, everything has been painted over, over a very paint chipped block and sheet metal, over grease, etc... The drawbar would have to be changed to make it into a show tractor as the one thats on it is all beat up and heavily gouged up from the logging and the belt pully is missing.
How much is this tractor worth keeping in mind that M's are kinda rare in my area, and a widefront is very rare?.
I don't think it's really anything I want as it needs so much work between the steering, gearshift, and paint, but I was curious as to what it's worth, the owner is asking $1,500. Thanks in advance,

I'm going to be a little rude, but tell him to stick it. That price is way to much for an M in the current condition. I'm so tired of these people that think they have some antique gold mind and want a fortune for their junk. Give him time and he will soon sell it for a reasonable offer. Other wise somebody with no concept/clue will pay too much for the tractor and regret it later. Just my opinion.

Offer him $200 for the widefront, and maybe he will give you the tractor for free. You are looking at about a 3-$4000 project. Rain caps won't keep water out during long term storage, as they tend to blow open in the wind.

I'd love that widefront as thats in very nice shape, but no, I know the guy wouldn't sell it for $200. He bought this tractor cheap at an auction, sprayed some paint on it, and originally asked $1,800 for it. That was 6yrs ago, it has been out side the road in front of his odds and ends store along with about 10 other farmalls, he will now take $1,500, but he is pretty firm on his price and doesn't seem too interested in getting rid of it. He hasn't sold any that I know of and they have all sat there for years and he never starts them. I'd really like a wide front, but the tractor is really wore out, it's just of those those tractors that eats on you because whenever you drive past it, it always catches your eye. Back when I was in high school my bus used to turn around in the guys driveway and I'd see it every morning. Oh well, I guess it will continue to set there. Thanks for replying!

Sounds like you are on a guilt trip for someone elses neglect. It isnt your moral responsibility to rescue and restore that tractor at ALL or ANY cost. You didnt let it sit and rot, someone else did, and because of that he allowed the tractor to devalue. If he would as CNKS said sell it to you at junk price, which it is junk, it just isnt in a fence row, but rather closer to the road, then it may be something for you to consider. Still, you will have a lot of green invested to bring it back to red standards. As to the WFE alone, you already said that it had been welded on, which makes it worth about $200. This guy will probablly hold out for his firm price until he is recalled by his maker, rather than part with it at fair market price. At that time, his widow will have an auction sale, and then it will be sold for what its worth.

The widefront hasn't ever been welded on and is in very good shape. The seat, seatbracket, and exhaust manifold have been. Yeah, it's definatly the guilt trip thing, I figgure it's a real shame somebody isn't getting some enjoyment out of it. You'd figgure after it has hung around this long he'd drop his price way down just to get rid of his unsightly lawn ornament. Oh well, everything happens for a reason.
Thanks

Thanks guys! in reply to asd, 02-26-2005 17:48:29
I figgured his asking price was steep and I wanted a second opinion. The steering and gearshift would be expensive and time consuming to repair from what I've gathered off this site.

I don"t know where you live, but I doubt seriously whether a tractor in the condition you mention could be worth the money being asked anywhere. I was at a sale today, (mid Michigan) and one went for $900.00 and was a decent running tractor with 90% rear radial tires. It didnt have WFE, but steering was relatively tight. Had all lights, wheel weights, good drawbar, fenders, new muffler, good steering wheel, and reparable front grill. Had lousy paint job, but that is irrelevant in a restorable tractor. My .02 worth, but I think you can do much better unless you live in Outer Slobovia.
