Well I got the back deck cover off...I"m way in over my head on this one. I have taken the Bull gear retaining washer and bolt off. I have taken the rear axle bearing cap off. I can not get the rear axle to budge. I know I need to pull it away from the bull gear to get it away from the bull pinion. To then get the bull pinion shaft cage out. Is there a video...manual...or something that shows how all this is done. I need help on this one guys..... ..

Yep its on my H. I went back to the barn right after I typed this question. I finally fiqured out that I could use a 3/8 rachet extention in between the two bull gear bolts and while backing the one out it actually pressed the axle and bearing out and I was able to get the gear out of the way. Only after removing the pto shaft. This is an amazing amount of work. I wish I had just tried to pull the seal some other way. How do I know if the shifting forks and the gears are in the right position before re-attaching the lid? Lord, Lord, Lord..... ..... ..

Hey, don"t get excited....we"ll all help as much as possible! Good job on the bull gear removal. Quite a chunk of iron hey? While you"ve got the pinion cage out replace that bearing...available at CNH dealer. I installed 2 seals on each side as the new and improved ones are 1/2 wide as originals. Didn"t want to do that job again on same tractor. remember to reinstall metal shims as removed (if any) behind pinion cage. As for reinstalling deck lid i had not removed shift lever and had placed it in neutral and placed sliding gears in trans as close to neutral as possible. This is a 2 or 3 man job installing as things need to be lined up as you go on with lid. In my case I had everything sealed up except for the lid on and I poured in 6 gallons of gear lube seemed easier than pouring in with a funnel. If in need of more suggestions just yell..... ..Mike

I wish I had seen your original post earlier. If you are changing the seals behind the brake drum, correct me if I am wrong, but you dont have to do all that work to change the seals.Drill two or three small holes in the old seal, get a self tapping screw and screw into the holes. The wiht a pair of pliers or vise grips or whatever you choose to use, pull on the seal one screw at at time until the seal comes out.I have also been able to pry against the head of the screws and got them out.Ive done it quite a few times.

Hi John,

Ever use one of these little trinkets? They really work slick. They're something like $13 if I remember right.

Tail,

Any toolman carries 'em. I bought this one at NAPA. It's the slickest way I've ever run across to yank a seal.

Tailhunter,
Try a search under "H bull gear removal". There was some good discussion back in January 8&9 about the same problem you are having. "Aces" had a great suggestion for pushing out the axel. I have my "H" tranny cover off right now, getting ready for warmer weather. Both brake shaft seals are leaking. Hoping the bearings are OK. Good luck.
