Sleeve Puller for an A or B

I'm making a sleeve puller for A's & B's. I need to know the outside diameter of the sleeves in a C-113 engine so I can make the round disk that pulls up on the sleeve from the bottom. I expect that mine is the early, smaller diameter sleeve. The block is a 1940 by the serial number.

The disk needs to be large enough to have full contact on the sleeve, but small enough that it doesn't damage the bore of the block. I will turn it on a lathe, so I can make any diameter needed.

I made a puck out of hard Nylon once to bang the sleeves out of a B (actually a power unit block)
The piston bores were 3 inch so I made that diameter just under 3 inch, and a .15 step so the larger diameter was 3.3, the thickness 1.55.
I put in a big bore kit but can't recall if it was 3.125 or 3.25 bore.

Are you going to reuse the sleeves? If not drive them out with a block of wood and hammer, they came out easy on my Super A.

Thanks Jerry, I know about the block of wood, but I want to finish this puller I started on.

Hi Dave, If your tractor is the original C113
cid engine the diameter of the piston is 3.0" so your sleeve puller would have to be undercut .015
to .020" to fit inside the sleeve and overall
diameter of sleeve is around 3.1875" to catch the
outside walls of the sleeve and be able to clear the block. I know you can put an oversize kit in those engines to 3.125" bore. The block is bore to 3.250" or something close to that.

If you can get the piston out from one of the those sleeves, you can drive out a sleeve with a piece of 2X2 oak and take accurate measurements. The overall diameter of the puck could be 3.200". I have one of those pucks, but it is buried somewhere in my tool box. It was made from aluminum about an inch thick. Hal

This one has been redone by a previous owner, I'm guessing in the '60's or '70's by the looks of the parts. It has 3-1/8 high compression pistons in it, so they are darn sure not original.

I'm thinking that the bore of the block has to be somewhere close to 3.25, so if I make the puller disk about 3.180 to 3.200 it ought to be about right. I plan to put a shoulder on it to fit inside the sleeve and center the whole thing up.

I just want to make sure I don't damage the block where the o-ring seats. Idealy, if somebody had an original sleeve and could mic the O.D., that would tell me exactly what I need to know.

There is an outside chance that the previous owner had the block bored to accept the later, C-123 sleeves, but I doubt it very much, and I really can't tell for sure until I tear everything apart.

Hi Dave, You can drive out one those sleeves
after you remove the piston. When I restore an A the pistons were seized and I soaked them with
transmission fluid. Two pistons came with the sleeves and the other two pistons came out without
the sleeves. I had a puck made and they came out too. Once they clear the sleeve seals you can
probably lift them out by hand. They're not pressed in like the dry sleeves.

I have sketch, if you would want a copy I'll mail it to you. You can either pull the
3.0" sleeve or the 3.125" with one puck. If this
was an original A they would accept the 3.125"
sleeves without any machining. That's the size I used in mine when I redid the engine. I just used the old connecting rods off the old pistons
and had the machine shop to install them on the new pistons. Hal

Hi Hal, I thought the bottom sleeve dia was 3.312, so if your dia on the puck was 3.0 to fit in the piston bore you could go as large 3.250 without damaging the block, or am I having senior moment?

That's probably very close. I wonder what the
block bore is on a Super C since you can use 3.1875" and 3.250" oversize kits in them. Hal

I was guessing at least 3.375", but you may be closer. Hal
