Valve Guide Question

I'm currently lost on my F-20 project. I ordered up a new set of guides for the motor. I recieved the guides and noticed right off the bat they are not an exact replacement. The original guides are mushroom shaped (lack of a better term. Part of the guide is used to center the valve spring. On my new guides they are just a straight shaft with no flange to center the spring. The new guides are also about a half inch shorter in length. The new guides however will press into the head no problems. They are shorter and do not have the flange that centers the spring. NAPA sold the exact same guides that I bought, so I know the new guides are for the F-20. Can someone clue me in on what I'm missing. Thanks.

Justin,

If you are out there in cyberspace, send me an email for some valve guide information.

The replacements I bought were like that too. I just closed my eyes and put them in.

I'm a little nervous to press them in and run them the way they are. Since the rest of the motor is going to be completely new, I plan on doing some pulling with this tractor. I called IH and one dealer wanted $32 for one valve guide and another dealership wanted $28 per guide. I asked the parts man if the guides were painted in green!!!! It will be cheaper for me to have the guides bored and resleeved. Heck, I might as well buy the tools to resleeve the guides since I've got two more heads to do. Hows the engine running with the aftermarket guides? You pull with that tractor Howard or is she for show?

Just make sure the height is set so the valve spring retainers don"t hit. All the farmall"s I"ve done valvejobs on were the same way. Be careful buying valve train parts though from aftermarket sources. Some farmall engines have subtle differences that need to be right for as new performance. Firecrator piston equipped engines have quite a few differences inside the motor for example. Different distributer shaft, carburetor, valves... sometimes the difference is meant to be that way. Napa couldn"t get a thing right when I rebuilt my super c with firecrators. All of it had to come from the dealer I worked at. At least it"s all original and all IH though. Good to go for another 50 something years.

Oh yes! The dealer used to sell them as a kit. They are still around to be found too if you have a good dealer. They came with a distributer shaft in most cases. A whole distributer in some. The timing curve is different. The advance springs were also part of it. The thermostat was different if I remember correctly also. Higher temp. I could be wrong onthat though. Mine uses a 180 and I had to modify a new one to work with two copper spacers fit in the neck. The timing is still set staticly at 0 but the curve will be different. Mine starts like a fuel injected car now since I rebuilt it with the firecrators and it does all it's chores easily. It dynoed at 30 hp too. Not bad for a super c.
