Well, tomorrow is the big day to fire up the 706 after a major overhaul. I'm trying to get my thoughts into making sure nothing will go wrong. Ive got the oil system primed up, 94 octane gas, valves at .025 cold for now, Antifreeze, carb rebuilt, rebuilt the distributor, new cap points coil, I think I got all of the bases covered, everything looks good, it turns over pretty decent. Ive been told by someone on here that the initial start up after a rebuild on these gas engines are a bit different, and the break in procedure should be a bit more precise. I thought I would fire it up, get it close, and then 1/4 throttle for 10 mins, then 1/2 for another 10, then 3/4 for 30 mins if everything checks out ok. Then retorque the head, and reset the valve lash. Run it again for another 10 mins at 1/2 throttle, change the oil. I have a dyno, and I intend on putting the 706 on it to finish breaking it in. If everything checks out ok and If my plan seems to be usable, should I put it on the dyno right away, or give it more running time with no load. Also, on setting the timing,,, Should I set it while it has a load on the engine, or go by the book? Ive also heard they are finiky on where it likes its timing set at. Any info would be great, and Im so glad that it will be up and running again and not collecting dust in the corner of the shop! My next project is installing a M&W stroker in a 450 Farmall! Thanks again! ChadS

ChadS - you mentioned that you have the "oil system primed up". What do you mean? I am having trouble getting our "460" started which hasen't ran in about 8 years. We had the head redone, but no bottom engine work done. The compression now seems low. Is this something I should do to help get it started? Thanks for your help!

I turned the engine over with the starter, for about 60 seconds, no spark plugs in it so it cranks easier. Id say, pour some Automatic transmission fluid into the cyls, let it soak overnite, Id recommend pulling the valve cover off to make sure you are getting oil to the head before you actually fire it up, engines that have been sitting, the rocker assembly can rust up in there too.. The tranny fluid should help give the compression back to get it to start, hopfully,,, the rings are not sticking. If everything is ok,, once the tranny fluid is burned out, run another compression check to see if the pressure had came up. If you know the engine is a good one, now is the time to start tuning it up, dont go working it too hard right off the bat, let it run for a while till it wakes up from that long nap. ChadS

Aren't the valves suppose to be 27 , now i could be wrong here but for the first time let them a bit lose like 28 or 29 and put it on the duyno as soon as ya make sure that it is ok and no leaks and load it to around 45 50 hp and vary the rpm's and let it get up to operating temp and watch it close for oil pressure and temp and make sure the timming is wright on at full throttel . I like to run them for 7-8 hours then i am happy. After ya get 3-4 hours on her check and see what kind of toqure rise we got 97 hp out of eugens . One of these day i am going to try and put electronic fuel injection on one just for shuts and giggels. and see if i can get a 150 hp out of one .
