I'm a 45 year old living in eastern n.c.on the shore of the Atlantic ocean. In this area you can say farming has given in to tourism.I don't have alot of knowlege to draw from locally they have either died or have rusted away.I have been interested in farmall since I was a child.I now have some for work and some for fun. I have a cub super a super m and f12. I'm busy with family first and Daddys' tractors whenever I can.I would appreciate your knowledge and experience. I'm looking at a 140 locally that has just developed a transmission knock. It does this in neutral and all gears but 4th .I have looked inside and saw nothing alarming. The oil gear seems to have a bit of wobble.Could this be the problem or the drive shaft .Please give me some options or checks if you would before I split.

greg: New one to me. I've just spent a few min looking at the transmission diagram in IT manual. In neutral only top shaft turns, so it must be in top shaft or pto. A tooth damaged or off will only affect a specific gear. Given your description and looking at power train travel for each gear, I'd say front bearing on top shaft. I'm thinking this way as when 3rd-4th speed gear moves forward for 4th gear it gives enough stability to shaft, you don't hear the bearing. Don't take this as gospel, transmission noises can travel. I'm just trying to sort out what it can't be. Haven't been able to put front bearing on top shaft in the can't be catergory.
