Hi guys,

I am planning to go to a local auction Saturday where a Super A in unrestored contidtion is listed. I see one on ebay, and the seller says they will take no less than $3700. This seems a little high to me, how about it? Can I expect the local one to go above $1000?

TIA

Sky,
I bought a 1959 Farmall 140 last September for $4500 with the following gear and felt it was a good deal by North Carolina standards (tractors seem to sell for less west of the Appalachian Mountains).
• Farmall 140 with fast hitch. Runs fine with one new rear tire but paint is pretty rusty in places like the Super A on your ebay link
• Woods 59 Rear mounted mower
• 2-14 bottom plow
• 5' Twin gang disk harrow
• Thingamajingy that has small plows connected to individual pigs-tail looking spring steel pieces all clamped onto a 2" square bar and fitting into the single point hitch. Takes more passes than a turning plow but does a good job tearing up ground. Have no idea what the proper name for this implement is as no one had one in my neighborhood growing up.
• Single point hitch blade good for plowing snow or moving dirt
• Full set of front and rear cultivators with plows, hilling coulters, etc.

I figured the tractor was worth $2500 and the implements were worth $2000. I was the first guy to see it and I bought it on the spot. The later told me he got 20 calls later that day from folks wanting to buy. At the end of the day, the question always is, "what is it worth to me". A wise man told me to answer that question before getting into a bidding process.

You may have been to many auctions and are not at all interested in what I have to say; but once those callers start going fast and I got my head spinning I get afraid to bid on anything.Plus you need good hearing to hear the tone the guy is using.Just takes getting used to and aint for me.Never saw many guys getting good deals once two or three start wanting something.Isaid ;Note to self never buy stuff at an auction take them stuff to sell for you.

See if they will give you the serial number of the tractor on ebay. You can then determine if it's a Super A. Looks a little rough from the picture. Hal

skycarp: Super A is worth $1,500. add $500. for a fast hitch (which the E bay one does not have) so add for each of the following needing no repairs to work. disk $500., blade $500., cult $500., rolling cultivator $500., plow $500. and middle buster $200. Deduct from each of those prices, cost of parts required to put each in perfect condition, and you will come up with value. As a potential buyer, value for money is all that counts. So if the Super A plus attachments are all in perfect condition needing no repairs for your garden season, then its worth $4,200. Tell him you will give him $4,200. and he buy all parts for the first 200 hours or one year which ever comes first. He probably wont go for that.

So look at it this way, $1,500. for the SA. Then go through the attachments, est all parts of all attachments in perfect condition. Price the perfect parts at CaseIH. Add that figure to the value of all attachments as scrap metal. That figure is what his attachments are worth. Not a penny more.

Hey Hugh, do you have any idea why it is that if there were so few BN Farmalls built that most of the B's for sale are BN's? I got it in my head to buy a smaller Farmall to restore since I will probably never get around to restoring the big one. Most all the B's I see are BN's. Confusing since I thought they only made about 1500 of them.
Am I wrong?

Dave: That B and BN are tractors I know very little about, aside from what the power train is. I can clearly see they are a relative of the A.

I also have to believe they were not as popular as IH hoped they might be. By 1947 they were gone forever, technically replaced by the C. Looking at tractors like the F-12 and F-14, I could never understand the development of B or BN I think the A was a smart move by IH, the numbers of A, SA, 100, 130 and 140 tell us that. I think if I had been the decission maker at IH the A would have been a new good idea and right in 1939 the C should have replaced the F-14.

Would have to be in mint top condition to be worth $3700. The Super A type tractors have come down in price in last few years around here due to tobacco growing becoming less and less. I would expect an original Super A not restored to go between $1000 and $3000, depending on the condition and what equipment was included. They nearly always have cultivators, but that does not add as much to the value as it used to. I'd be very surprised to see a Super A in good running condition go for under $1000.

Here in Georgia unrestored but running and working Super A's seem to run from $1400 to $2000. I haven't seen any restored ones for sale around here.

Skycarp:
The Super A on Ebay is way too expensive at $3,700, however it would surprise me if the local one sold for less than $1,500 if it runs. I"d wait till the local sale...and leave the one on Ebay there.
Just my opinion
Jeff

That Super A is on ebay for the second time. Last time the bid got up to $2000-$2500. $3700 is too much IMO.

Maybe the seller has a friend or two running up the bid.
