I have a couple of nicks/scratches on the chrome hydraulic cylinder rod of the cylinder that I am repacking. Can I fill them in with JB weld or will it fall off because it will be in hydraulic oil under pressure? Thanks!!

I saw an experienced hydraulic rebuilder use JB weld so I started using it with good results. I clean the spot with acetone, wipe it clean, use my propane torch to burn off any residue then wipe on the JB with a smooth rounded applicator. I sand it down a bit with 1000 grit sandpaper after 24 hrs. I used it on my Wagner backhoe 5 year ago and nothing has popped loose and didn't seem to damage the wiper or o-rings.

Does the cylinder have packing or o-rings?

If it is packing, it will seal well for many years against scratches and dings.

O-rings will not last as long but will do better than you think.

JB Weld is great stuff but I would expect it to get caught under the packing creating a leak.

If you think the dings and scratches are sharp edged you can polish them down with crocus cloth or very fine sandpaper without doing any damage to the surrounding rod.

Until you reassemble the cylinder and find how well it works with the bad rod you probably won't believe me : )

John, call the guys at Devine Hydraulics - I think they're in Salem. One of them, Jason, told me a possible fix for nicks in a rod is just to use a good epoxy paint - let it fill the nick and wipe off the excess. I haven't tried it yet but they can give you the details.

Ive had it in the corner of an oil filled transmission on a bike since 1988.Trouble is the amount of JB weld will be such a thin sliver it may come off from going in and out.It cant hurt to try it.Maybe try to scrape it over the scratches when its wet, not sanding on the rod later.Clean the area with thinners first it will adhere for a while.Could be bad to come off inside the cylinder.

I have not done that but it is worth a try. Fill in, sand with fine grit, polish if possible. Don't think the JB will be affected, as it will not be under stress. But you are not going to be able to sand the JB Weld without scratching the rod.
