new 6V battery and charging system

The new style spiral wound batteries can only stand 7.5V of charging voltage. The generator/regulator on my H puts out 8.2V at WOT. Two questions - 1) Has anyone run those batteries at higher voltage and had good results ? 2) Is there a practical way to adjust the output on the voltage regulator ?

Buy the way, the old battery has a dead cell (~11.5 s.g. max) on the negative end. Does a cell go bad because the plate is damaged, or is there a way to bring them back ?

Those are darned good, but expensive batteries. I put one in my car last weekend. It says to never go above 15 volts for the 12 volt version - so your 7.5 volt maximum sounds about right. You really want to keep your charging voltage around 7 to 7.1 volts anyway. All batteries will last longer this way. You can adjust the third brush, as others have said, or you can look for a bigger resistor for your field winding. You can also look for a 6 volt alternator, which would be the perfect solution.

Check out the Peukert Number on those spiral wound batteries. They have the lowest (best) number of any I"ve seen.

I would run the tractor and see if that voltage drops as CNKS has posted. If it doesn't drop you may be better off to replace the regulator. Running the tractor with voltage above 7.5 volts may void your warranty on the battery too. When a battery has a dead cell with specific gravity of
1100-1150, I never had any luck in improving that cell by more charging. I've even replaced the electolyte in the bad cell and it still made no difference. Exide claims their spiral wound batteries will start after sitting for one year.

I'm going to toss out an answer in the hope that someone who knows what they are talking about will give more specific info. My H service manual says the when cold the generator is supposed to put out 13-16 amps and 7.7-8.1 volts. Hot 9-11 amps and 7.3-7.6 volts. This is with a cutout relay, my manuals don't mention the voltage regulator. If you have a local electrical shop, that has someone that understands generators (I have one of those) I'm sure he can lower the voltage slightly. On the other hand, I bet your generator doesn't put out 8.2 hot.

Yes, we need to first know if this is the cut-out relay type or the voltage regulator type. A regulator can be adjusted inside the unit. If it is the cut-out relay type then you will need to make the adjustments to the third brush inside the generator.

And, my C has a voltage regulator and a adjustable 3rd brush generator, I am SURE about that, the generator guy adjusted both.

cnks., I got to thinking about that after I posted, I think all of the IH six volt generators have the third brush, so you are correct.

My Super H has a fixed 3rd brush. So somewhere in time, IH dropped the adjustable 3rd brush even on mag equipped tractors and went to voltage regulation. In my C operators manual, the cutout relay/adjustable 3rd brush is mentioned in the mag section, the voltage regulator in the battery ignition section. My C (battery ignition) has a rebuilt generator (no delco tag), so even if it came with a fixed 3rd brush, it was replaced by an adjustable 3rd brush generator -- seems the adjustable 3rd brush would be easier to adjust than the voltage regulator. Would still like to see an answer to Riverbend's question, as I have considered that type battery, but haven't wanted to cough up the money.

Doesn't the 3rd brush control the charging current, (which also looks to be important for these spiral batteries), and the regulator control the voltage ? Taking a quick look under the cover, there does not appear to be any straight forward voltage adjustment in the regulator.

How do you adjust the voltage in one of these charging systems ? Is there a good place to look and see how a voltage regulator works ?

I plead ignorance. When I take mine to the generator place, I take the generator and the regulator. I have seen him move the third brush, and there are one or two screws to adjust on the regulator. Can't find anything in my letter series service manuals, they only mention the cutout relay. I do have a book by called Auto Engines and Electrical Systems. Simplified version is that the book says to turn the screw clockwise to increase spring tension and raise voltage and vice versa. I'm not the one to be answering this, I was hoping someone else would. I have a good inexpensive generator place, and take mine there, as everytime I try to get an old generator to work right, I mess it up.

Thanks. Turning the screw to change the spring tension looks like the tip. I'll have to take another look, I saw the spring, but it did not look like there was any adjustment on it. We have a guy who is pretty good with motors, but I have never taken a generator to him. Those guys are getting hard to find.

It seems to me that Bob M has instructions on how to adjust the third brush. It would be somewhere over in the "articles" section.
