Manual Question

I a little confused about the manuals sold in the marketplace area. This spring I plan on restoring an M and I'm not sure which manuals to get.

There are manuals listed saying "gas engine", "clutch only", etc. They don't give a description of what is actually included in the manual.

Which service manuals do I need? From what I can gather it looks like I need the general M service manual plus the engine manual plus the clutch manual. Is that right?

Thanks for all the advice and recommendations. I went through the marketplace and binder books and made a list of all the M specific manuals offered. Here's what I found:

HERE
IH-S-ENG GAS E (engine manual)
IH-S-CLUTCH (clutch manual)
IH-S-M (service manual)
IH-8 (I&T Shop Manual)
IH-P-M,MD (parts manual)
IH-O-M,MV (operators manual)

BINDER BOOKS
1004204 (operators manual)
TC-28H (parts manual)
GSS-5053 (clutch manual)
GSS-5033 (service manual)
ISS-1039 (engine manual)

From everybody's responses it appears that I definitely "need" to buy:
1. Service manual
2. Parts Manual
3. Operators Manual

And Depending on what I plan on rebuilding, and how much money I want to spend I "can" buy:
1. Engine specific manual
2. Clutch specific manual
3. I&T Shop Manual

Am I understanding everything right?

Thanks again for all the help.

That sounds about right -- one other thing, I'm not downing this site, but the reprints YT sells are poor quality, unless they have improved. Binder Books are digital copies, very clear photos and diagrams, important if you are looking for detail. I do have a couple of Binder's Blue Ribbon Manuals that appear to be photocopies, but those are the exception rather than the rule. The operator's, parts, and service manuals are as good as copies get.

As to the service manual, order GSS-MTA from Binder Books--although I don't have an MTA, I do have five other letter series and this book probably covers everything that is apecific to the MTA -- first thing I do is order manuals. Specific system-only Blue Ribbon manuals may also be available -- ask when you call-503-684-2024. The other two you want are the Operators and Parts manuals. The I&T manual, IH-8 covers the letter series, including the SMTA, and has some things that the IH manuals don't, although there is not as much detail. Except for the I&T manual, these are exact reprints of the Factory manuals, and even the I&T uses factory diagrams. Something over $100 will buy all of these, there is really nothing else published specifically for the MTA. Don't worry about them being printed for professsionals. If you get hung up there are many people on this forum who can help. In fact the procedures would go better for everyone if they would read the manual first, then ask specific questions concerning any problems.

Ryan, you said M, not MTA, got you confused with one of the other posts, everything I said is correct, except the service manual number is GSS 5033.

I got my first IH a few years back, a SMTA that needed work. Purchased a Blue Ribbon service book which covered somme of the tractor, also an I&T manuel for other parts. I hav eparts book also which definitely helps when taking things apart of putting them together as well as how things should be in it. I&T manuel is quite generic but good if you have some mechanical skills, generally cheaper than the Blue Ribbon books. An operator's manuel is a must also.

IH published many Blue Ribbon Service Manuals and the like ostensibly for the service techs in the dealerships. They would cover a single procedure, often on a single model. They can be useful but on the other hand, since they assumed it was being used by a service tech they often say things like "after splitting the tractor, proceed to step one on the clutch removal.."when you don't know how to split the tractor! Like many of these guys, I have had good luck with a model specific Service Manual (shop manual)from Binder Books. I would not make the I & T manual my first purchase, they seem to cover too many procedures for too many models and the detail suffers as a result. The Nebraska Cowboy always has sage wisdom as do many others on these pages. This site offers a sample of the Blue Ribbon Manuals I mentioned (these are mainly for Cubs) Good luck and have fun!http://www.cleancomputes.com/Cub/index.html

I find the parts manual a big help. It does not tell you in words how to do things, but it has a breakdown of how things go together, and it also tell part #'s of most parts. That is really helpful when you are ordering parts.

I would look at a shop manual for your Farmall M.
It would cover engine, clutch, drive train and steering. Probably just about everything on the tractor. Check with Binderbooks. Hal
