Went and picked up my first H Farmall on monday. Owner had pulled it out of the barn where it had been sitting for many years. The sheet metal is in good shape, but it has a couple of problems. The engine turns over about a 1/8-1/4 turn and stops. Not sure about it. But the bigger problem is in the rear. The rear wheels will simply not turn. It will not shift into any gear, but it won't shift out either. I have raise one tire to get it to turn, and it still won't move. Did the same to the other side and no luck. I am very confused as to what the problem could be.

Colekicker, I learned a lot from an old guy who has an auto wrecking yard from the 1930's. He told me to never turn an engine over that hasn't been running. He claimed you needed to turn it back and forth so the pistons would work any rust and corrosion ahead of thier path and eventually you would turn the engine a complete revolution rather than forcing the pistons to travel up the entire sleeve or down in a corroded environment. Do as the others have suggested, get oil into the cylinders and I would take the valve cover off and oil up the rocker arms and what I could of the valve train from above. I have two H's and my experience is that if it is below freezing where you are the rear end has water in it and the tractor is frozen. Brake bands on an H can corrode/rust to the drum and be stuck on there pretty solid as well. Both my H's had a lot of water in the rear end when I got them, one had two and a half gallons come out before the oil started coming, the other had about a gallon. I am sure the owner of your tractor didn't put it in the barn locked in two gears, it was probably running and drove in , so you need to thaw it out, lube it up and pretty soon you will be spinning it over and putting fuel to the spark. There was a lot of good responses to your question. Keep us posted of your progress and don't be afraid to ask more questions, lots of us have started out with a tractor in worse condition than yours...good luck, Mike in Exeter Ontario

agree with bob.also the other posts. you need patiece when dealing with the engine. if it turns as you say the problem may not be in the cylinders.dont use excessive force till you eliminate the possible causes.

Old tractors are so much fun!!!
The shifter thing happens to me fairly frequently.
Like Bob said pull the shifter and move the linkage into neutral.
Ice/ water in the rear end.( see photo of my 300)
Might also be rusted brake bands.

“It will not shift into any gear, but it won't shift out either. I have raise one tire to get it to turn, and it still won't move. Did the same to the other side and no luck.”

These are the classic symptoms of a worn shift lever causing the transmission to get caught in two gears at once.

First thing I’d do is remove the shift lever (knock out the cross pin where the lever enters the tranny cover) and peek inside. If the slots in all 3 shift rails are not centered in the opening, take big honkin’ screwdriver or similar and use it to move the rails so all 3 slots are centered. It may help to jack up one rear wheel if the rails are hard to move.

Otherwise the advice below is right on. Good luck!!

My H has water in the rear end. this winter i got it started put it in gear and it wouldn't move. when it got warmer I started it up and I got it to move. so you must have water in the rear end.

Could be several problems.
1. If it is freezing or below there could be ice in the rear end locking up the bull gears.
2. Could be stuck between gears and/or the clutch disc has stuck to the flywheel facing.
3. I suspect rust on the sleeves not allowing the rings to go past the rust. 4. the brake bands could be corroded to the drums.

Take your time as you get aquainted with your new tractor. Patience will pay off in the long run.

I agree with Bob, what is the temp where you are right now? If the rear end starts working after it warms up a bit you know your first job will be to drain the transmission oil. For some reason I kind of doubt it's locked in two gears, would have been very hard to push into the barn in that condition.

As for the engine, I'd pull the plugs and shoot some WD40 or/and MM oil in each piston and let it sit for a day or two. Then start trying to turn it over with the crank (without plugs). Once it turns free put the plugs back in and let it run for a few minutes then start draining the oil and coolant. When you refill the oil I'd definately add some stop leak to the oil to soften up those oil seals that have been sitting for so long.

I am 100% sure it is not ice in the rear end. I am in Texas in between Houston and Austin. Brake bands or being in two gears are my bets for right now. I'll update everyone this weekend.

I Had an engine do the same thing. It would turn a bit either direction and stop. Turned out that some of the valves were stuck and when the cam lobes would hit them it would stop turning. Eventually the valves worked loose, but were stuck open then. Kept working them up and down until they freed up.
On the other, brake bands would be my guess too.

Mine did the two gear thing when I was shifting from road gear to low,it locked up in the middle of the road. That was no fun at all.It would not budge, but the engine would start with clutch in.Luckily a more seasoned gent from across the road, happened to be visiting and told me exactly what Bob said earlier about the shifter. My H Had a little cap on each side(like a tiny freeze plug)of the shifter where it pivots.when removed then you can tap the shifter pin out with a small punch.I inadvertently shrank the cap,by using a punch about half the size of the cap and tapping it a few times in the center. Then I picked the plug out with a pocket knife.after that it was tap the pin thru, align the slots, and put it together and drive.btw I "unshrank"the cap by turning it over and using punch to flatten it back. You may know this already
but it may help someone in the future.Good luck!
