As most of you know I'm in the middle of restoring my 1936 Farmall F-20. I've been doing some research and found an interesting website on the original IH Gray paint. I'm not going into details but a subject bought a couple gallons of original gray paint from IH and was able to mix it up and duplicate it through Dupont. Go to this website for further information Link I already have a forum going over in the paint section but decided this needed to be discussed over here as well. What is everyones thoughts about this paint. Do you think it would be the true gray color after all of these years? I'm thinking of purchasing some of this paint but have my reservations. All opinions are appreciated and I (and would think everyone else) would like to know what color codes everyone is using for the gray and red paints.

Well James you can believe what you want but I am convinced that there was more than one gray. I think tractors before 1925 or 26 were a lighter gray. As for thae 1936 F20 you need to look at mine. It is correct. I matched it myself and mixed my own paint.

I put about a third to a half cup of white in a gallon of Rust-o-leum gloss black from Wal-mart.

The correct red for letter series tractors made until about 1949 is IH 50/PPG 70019/DuPont 7410, someone correct me if that is not correct for the late F series also.

I use PPG, and I stay away from both dealer and tractor store paints. Any major brand is ok. By major I mean PPG/DuPont/Sherwin Williams/Martin Senour (includes NAPA, I believe). Painting is one of those "get what you pay for things"--there is a lot of disagreement on this subject.

Martin Senour is actually made by Sherwin Williams.NAPA (like Sears) makes nothing on their own.
Here's a unique fact: Look at " SW " upside down! lol

I did not know that, I do know that NAPA does not make their own paint, or anything else, just like most automotive places. So SW aquired MS sometime in the past? Or has been that way for years? I have no local dealer for either, unless NAPA sells it. In fact, I thought SW made only house paint until I started on this forum in the late 90's, and I hadn't even heard of MS. Paintwise, I think Sherwin Williams is an older company than DuPont. PPG aquired Ditzler in the 70's, I believe, or maybe earlier.

I think NASON is the oldest. They were acquired by Dupont and are being run as Dupont's economy line. With Dupont being the mainstream product and Spies Hecker and Standox being their "supreme" lines.
Actually,Spies makes Dupont more profit (sold at a higher price level)and is artificially their "supreme" line. However,as I have never used that product (its German made and costly)I cant say how good it really is.I know some body shops swear by it.Of course some swear by Nason too...if only for the cost savings.

I use PPG, thus am not that familiar with DuPont. I know that Nason is Dupont's economy line, roughly equivalent to PPG's Omni. Did not know that Nason was a company, though, just thought it was one of DuPont's paint lines. However, I guess DuPont would have to aquire paint companies to be able to sell paint, just as PPG "Pittsburgh Plate Glass" did. But, when DuPont got into the paint business, did they formulate any of their own paint, or were they all aquisitions?
