I am currently restoring a 1944 Farmall H. I has been suggested that I pull and crankshaft and have it turned as there are some small groves on the journals. Pulled all the rod bearing, two of the main, the main bearing toward the rear of the tractor is tough to get to, any suggestions? Also, once this is off, whats the next step in pulling the crank from the motor?

How bad are the little grooves?
did you tear it down because of low oil pressure?

Engine was locked up when I purchased it, soaked the rings and got the motor loose. No data about the motor history from the past owner. Groves are not bad, one neighbor said to have the crank turned, the other said it looked ok. Really don't want to pull the motor and have the crank turned because of the cost. But I want to do it right.

ofcourse not seeing it , its hard to say, but if the crank just has some marks on it but is still within the measured tolerance , it should be fine....i've had a few the same way.....use a micrometer to measure the rod journals, it will be diffacult to measure the main journals, ...but an expierenced eye can tell you if it looks damaged...get some emery paper and clean up the journals the best you can..... when istalling the new bearings, obtain and learn how to use plasti-gauge, this will tell the whole story..... .don't forget to hone the cylinder walls, and install new rings....and have the valves & seats ground in the head before installing it

Just a suggestion here ..... you can buy an exc original H with an exc running engine , fenders & the whole 9 yards for about $1500 - fix the normall misc minor rep's & minor cosmetics , throw some paint & tires on it .....then in all the time you saved by not doing your engine--instead tear your H apart & sell the parts on e-bay - it'll bring about what you pd for the good H (of course this will only work if you'r interested in saveing a lot of time and about a $1000 or so.....if you "just want to rebuild an engine" - then as others have suggested , just pull the engine & "do it up right" !)

I think it would be easier to pull the engine so
you can remove the clutch and flywheel from the crankshaft. The engine block may need to be cooked too and have new cam bearings installed.
