Starter on my Super C had a bad bendix, but would start tractor. I replaced with entire new starter and now won't crank. The solenoid clicks and with test light it lights when I hit the starter, but won't crank. I put old starter back on and now it does nothing. I even tried both without being installed on housing and nothing. Solenoid does click each time, but thats it. Thanks ahead of time!

Just got done needlessly chasing an electrical problem on a 454... would only get a click every once in a while when trying to start it, then it would come clear and start. I took for granted that the positive battery cable and connector was OK because it looked that way. It was an old stiff large-strand #2 cable. Replaced with a new #2 welding type cable and a new connector and now it starts and charges like a "new" tractor. I should have been checking for 12 volts at the solenoid when cranking... wouldn't have seen it with the old cable. Perhaps you should try using a voltmeter instead of a "light". Make sure you see your battery voltage at the starter. You'll find it,I'm sure!

The starter doesn't care which battery post it is connected to, + or - is the same to it.

Generator or alternator is a different matter, either could be destroyed by wrong polarity.

did the hot post on the solenoid turn as you were tightening the cables? if so may have twisted the stud enough to break the lead going to the post inside solenoid. just a thought

Be sure that battery is fully charged. Make sure
you've got good, clean and tight battery connections. If this is still a 6 volt postive
ground system, be sure to fasten the negative cable from the battery to the starter and ground the positive cable to a clean place with no paint
on the tractor. You can do this before you install the starter on the tractor and just short across the starter solenoid. Be careful doing this because that bendix drive will energize in a second if it is working right. Keep your fingers away from that starter gear. Hal

Bad batteries, bad cables, or even bad connections are possible.

First thought is maybe your battery is weak? I have seen the times when a battery had enough to click the solenoid or even light the lights, but not enough to spin the starter.
