Does anyone know how many shims need to be placed behind the bearing retainer that holds the pinion shaft in the trans? Mine has 2 thick and one thin
behind it now. Just wondering if this is right.
Thanks, Oldironcrazy...

When you set a pinion to ringgear the amount of shims differs from one to the next and if you are just changing bearings then reinstall what you removed this should keep things close .

Hey Tractor Vet. Thanks for the comeback but can you tell me what the proper setting is for ring and pinion depth and how to check it? I know the backlash is adjusted by shimming the bearing cups on the sides of case but i'm not familiar with pinion depth. Thank you.

If you check the link below, then go to the Blue Ribbon Service Manuals, then to the GSS-1411, you will find the answers to your questions.

The Cub Manual Server has all kinds of info on it.

Hope this helps
