IH 656 Gas

I've been working to get my Uncle's 656 running after it had been sitting for a couple years. The timing has been checked, the fuel system cleaned and the carburetor cleaned and adjusted. It starts right up and runs smooth. Prior to removing and thoroughly cleaning the carburetor and installing new gaskets, I would have to have the choke pulled almost all the way out to keep it running. After the carb work, it requires the choke to be about 1/3 pulled out to keep it running, but it runs smoothly at constant rpm.
When I idle it down and then increase the throttle quickly, I'm getting a lot of backfiring and popping. If I increase the throttle slowly though, it runs okay up to max. rpm----keeping the choke at about 1/3 applied.
This carburetor has the electronic solenoid but I've taken it off momentarily and put on a manually adjusted screw-type main jet adjustment off of a 460 gas.
Any thoughts as to why I might be getting the backfiring?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I've eliminated all but the distributor advance. I've not taken the points plate off to inspect the centrifugal advance weights yet and am anxious to see what I might find there.(I'm assuming what the distributor advance will look like although I've not seen a parts break out on it) Otherwise, it looks like it will be a case for re-scrutinizing what I've already done. The carb was completely disassembled and I know its passages are clean. I really appreciate everyone's help.

Had the same thing on my brother's 560 even after soaking the carb. Found the load jet passage ways plugged with rust (jet was fine).
Dug around with picks, drills, torch tip cleaner, and compressed air to get it out.
The tractor was sitting outside for 3-4 years and the bowl filled with rain water and rusted the carb.

Captiank and others seem to have hit the nail on the head with their responses, sure sounds like a lean condition. Another possible reason for it being lean: We've got a 656 gasser and the inside of the gas tank is rusty and little bits of crud tend to come through and plug things up pretty often. Anything in the sediment bowl? Take the fuel line off at the carb and make sure there's a good stream of gas coming out there, and also check the screen at the carb inlet. You can also check for a bad intake gasket by spraying a little carb cleaner around the gasket area with it idleing, if the idle speed changes you've found a leak.

i am assuming you have put on a new cap and wires and plugs

could be something very simple or any of the others.

Hello, I have a Chrysler ind engine in a forklift that does the same thing. The intake valve idea is something I haven't checked but sounds like a good idea. If you run it very long with the choke out be sure to keep an eye on the oil and make sure too much gas is not getting into the oil. The oil will get thin and not lubricate. Good Luck, YC

Well if the selinoideis working and the neddel is going all the way back like it should then it is fine as all it is supose to do is shut the fuel off to the main jet when you turn the key off so the engine will not diesel on shut down when it is hot You my have not got the carb totaly cleaned out like you think or the timming is off a bit or the centrifcal advance is sticking or the heat riser is not working and warming up the intake like it should or you have a air leak in the intake and it is leaning out the fuel . On the gassers they will stumbel when cold but as the intake warms they should have good throtel responce. Check out what i have told you and see what you find.

The backfiring is fuel in the intake exploding possibly being caused by a too lean condition, which is also being indicated by the fact that you need to have the choke out 1/3 to keep it running. Since you mention that timing and the fuel system have been checked, I’ll presume that you have adequate fuel flow to the carburetor.

That would leave too low a float level, a fuel mixture adjustment that is too lean, a leak in the intake manifold (or gasket) somewhere allowing air to get in. Another possibility is an intake valve that is not closing all the way because it is sticky, sticking, or out of adjustment.

Just a thought but what about the distributor advance? Is it stuck either full advance or no advance. Otherwise sounds like you still have some passages plugged in the carb. If you have a diagram of the air/fuel flow in the carb it should show the progression as the throttle is opened.
