The fuel gauge reads 1/4 when full, and the ground speed on the digital tach doesn't function. Have any suggestions where to start trouble shooting. Tom

The fuel guage reading 1/4 tank will most of the time be the sending unit, just grounding the wire will only make sure that your guage works but gives you a good guess that the sender is bad. If you have a little volt meter you can easily check the sender. With the sender out of the tank and the volt meter set to check ohm's put one lead on the ground and the other on the screw. Lift the float up and down and the needle on the meter should move smoothly like a guage. If it don't then the sender is shot. The ground speed sender is located under the seat in the range cover. You might be able to take the floor panel out and look to see if you can find the plug end. Try unplugging it and clean the connections, if this still don't work then you might need to replace the sender. 5 bolts and the seat will lift up (I tip the seat onto the back ledge hanging out the rear window just far enough that it don't fall out and unscrew the big hand nut on the steering wheel to remove the steering wheel helps make room to work). To install the sender, you screw it in till it hits the gear and back it out 1/4 to 1/2 a turn, and then tighten the jam nut. Hope this is enough info for ya.

does it have the extra fuel tank under the cab? if so, the sender on the top tank is likely bad. my 1086 did the same thing- read 1/4 when full, and when you noticed the gauge start going down fron the 1/4 mark, you'd better be heading for the "gas station" because it would soon be out of fuel. i replaced the top tank sending unit and now its fine. you can check the sending unit by grounding the lead wire that screws onto the center post. if the gauge goes to full, the sender is bad.

It's probably the wiring. Tractors are subjected to harsh environments. Could be corrision. The wiring harness goes around all sorts of "pinch points." Vibration could have cut through a wire, shorting it out or severing it completely.
