Hi.The reason that i couldnt find that PTO lever on our 434 International,,was because it was taken off.I had our neighbour look at it this morning,,and he couldnt find it(he used to own the same type of tractor).Seems that all that is there is a small"stub",that the lever was"supposed" to be attached to.The PTO,wont spin, when this "stub",is turned with pliers. He said that mabe the "forks "are broken?....Ill pull out the PTO lever piece, and see if it is anything broken,,there must be,somewhere.I understand i can just unbolt this part and pull it out. What should i look for ?What could be broken?..Thanks....GW

I believe the tractor in question is an IH 444. This tractor has a live PTO with a two stage clutch. There are in effect two clutches and a shaft within a shaft that drives the PTO. The PTO not working could be a problem with the clutch, or a previous owner reworked the clutch and just put in a single stage clutch. You'll have to split the tractor to fix if the clutch is the problem.

I knew it had to be something like that. The lever was probably removed because the PTO no longer worked, and the previous owner was to cheap to fix it.

What you may end up doing is pulling the entire PTO unit out of the tractor to work on it. Be careful, though. You will end up with a big oil mess if you just pull the unit. Either drain the transmission first, or park the tractor on a pretty decent downhill incline.

I'm not sure if that tractor had an independent/live PTO or a transmission-driven PTO. If it's a live PTO, you'll have clutches and whatnot. If it's a simple transmission-driven PTO, you'll have a sliding collar arrangement.

Hi.Yes this is a "434" International.I dont know what kind of PTO,system it had.All i know is that it "should" have had a lever with"set markings",but, like you said, the lever was removed, because the PTO didnt work.I guess this is a much larger job than i expected....ill let a mechanic do this .Thanks,GW

Don't get too excited just yet!! Those levers can just break off. Also, if you pull the lever, there is a roll pin on the inner end that holds teh shift fork in place on the shaft, they often break. If the lever and roll pin are all that's broke, you don't want to split the tractor! Take out the three bolts that hold the lever in place and inspect the assembly. If the roll pin is in place, double check to see that it was actually in the groove in the PTO collar (somebody else may have had it apart before. ;)

...if you remove those 3 bolts, will that shaft with the roll pin, pull straight out? Is that above the oil level in the rear end? Thanks Hound
