I want to replace the rings on my 1942 H. The block is still "in tractor". What is the best way to remove the pistons, from the top or the bottom? If from the top, what is the best way to push them up and out?

Thanks.

I think you'll quickly find that the pistons won't come out the bottom with the crankshaft in the way...

Pull off the head and oil pan, Cut out the ridge at the upper end of the cylinders with a ridge reamer to smooth the bores/sleeves, uncap the rods and the pistons and rods will push out the top real easy. Notice how clever IH was to 45 degree the rod caps so the rods would clear the cylinder walls easily. 99% of the replaceable cylinder sleeve engines always have the rods and pistons come out and go back in from the head end.

After you get the head off check for a ridge at thr top of thr cylnder. If their is a ridge you will need to get a rifge rimer and remove it. or you will have a he## of a time getting them out.

The pistons will only come out the top. Pull the head and oil pan. Use a piece of wood and push the piston out after unbolting the rod.

Purdue I replaced the rings in my 41 last fall and it was not hard after pan removal pull bolts out of rod ends they are numbered 1 thru4 and push straight up there is plenty room under neath after pan is off. Looks a little harder than it is. Good luck

They come out the top. Just push them up with your hammer handle.
