I have the IH 826 tractor w/hydrostatic transmission. It has been runnig great but yesterday while doing my late winter warm up it would not go forward/backward & no power steering? Engine runs smooth & the power takeoff will spin. I warmed the engine/trany area good with my reddy heater & let the engine idle (took rite off) for an hour before trying any "action". I seem to be dead in the snow bank at this time. Help?

04/26/01- I read these post, nada

Hey JJK I got the 826 running around the farm again:-) Solution: I checked the tranny fluid level; it was fine but dirty looking so thought why not drain it & flush & refill with new. When I tried to drain the transmission nothing came out! I poked around up the plug hole & solid ice. So & fired up my weed burner & reddy heater & warmed the sucker up like it was on a florida beach;) Four hours later & two gallons of water drained before fluid came out. You can guess the rest of the story..... ...

Good deal! That much water in the oil frozen would be enough to block the suction tube. Nice to hear that it wasn't somthing more serious. That's something that should be checked and drained every now and then especially in the cold climates like we have(I'm in central MN). Condensation builds up inside with the warming and cooling that the metal does. Case IH Hy-Tran absorbs a percentage amount of moisture(best on the market) to prevent raw water from going through critical parts that need to be lubed. After having that much water in there, pay some attention to the operation of your tractor for some damage to the pumps and valves are possible(esspecially hydro's). Hopefully not but don't be to scared of it, its just a heads up to you.

Nope, had to do the town thing last two days. I did look for the woodruff key but can't find where this is located. I have a manual too;-) maybe I should throw it away, eh? "sposed to get into the 20's here so it will be nicer weather to check things out. I sure do need this tractor come May!

I hope I don't have you lost in your tractor. If you pulled the cover off that has the hyd. pump mounted on it, the gear on the pump should be tight to the shaft, and this is where the key would be that I'm refering to. If you have an IT manual they might be showing you stuff for a gear drive tractor as well. They're pump is on the left side of the TA housing. I'm pretty sure the pump on a hydro is on the right side of the hydro housing. I've worked on a couple hydo's and they're all basically the same set up. Don't hesitate to ask any questions.

Ok JJ thanks for hangin' in there with me. I have a small 160 acre farm here 30 miles outa Fairbanks. Sorta run this by myself now that the kids are gone.
I'll take the cover off tomorrow. Will I have to drain some fluid first?

Just for the heck of it, try dumping another 5 gallons of hytran in. If the o-ring isn't sealing right at the pick-up, overfilling will solve your problem and won't hurt anything.

Another 5 gal? Heck it's time for a total refill if I do that;) IF Overfilling will not damage anything I'll try after I check out the key on the pump shaft.

If the filter isn't plugged or froze up I would maybe go after the hyd pump located on the right side of the hydro housing if I'm remembering right. Possibly the key sheered on the pump shaft or the nut came loose and the key fell out. I don't think it would be the flex plate on the flywheel cause you mentioned that the pto works. If everything seems to check out ok then there may be a leak on the suction side and sucking air.
