I was wondering where the PTO,for my 1969 434 International is?Is there a lever that i shift to engage it into gear? The PTO,isnt spinning,so i assume that there must be something i pull,or flip,to make it work. This is my first IH,,so im not familliar with it ....yet.Got the shifting problem down to a small "grind",stll dosnt shift well,at first startup.....Thanks..GW

It also has a two stage clutch, make sure it is all the way down, before you put it into gear. Hound

Not familiar with the 434, the 444 has a long lever by the left side of the seat, it goes into the trans housing at about foot rest level. It could be that this lever is missing for whatever reason. See if you see a broken off stub entering the rear end housing at about the level of the foot rest, or some sort of a plug if it is missing -- doesn't make much sense to me but it has to be there. Don't be concerned about the negative comments.

Gw, I hope you always come onto our forum and ask questions and you are always welcome. Your question was worded so that many of us thought you were a new tractor owner for the first time and the concern was for your safety. It was my uncle who was killed last week when a hay bale came back down the loader on top of him, so I am concerned for your safety too. That is why you got some of the responses you did. Since you have operated a tractor and feel confident I will tell you what I can. I have a B250 and the PTO engagement lever is down by your left heel, and the tractor you have is similair. There are two holes in the trans case, the lever locks into the back one to put the PTO in gear and locks into the front hole , out of gear. Please work carefully around a PTO, please come back to the forum and ask questions and become a regular, as I said, you are welcome here Gw, and the guys were concerned for your safety...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Hey Mike,

You're pretty darned good with words and such.

Someone needs to tell that young feller over on the tractor talk board, who is trying to put a bale spear in his loader bucket, that he is playing with a powder keg also.

Tractors, PTOs and big bales are nothing to fool around with, IMHO.

Allan

The transmission is NOT synchronized. You need to push the clutch, stop the tractor, and WAIT for the transmission to stop spinning before you shift. ANY grinding is bad.

As for the PTO lever, I don't know where it is. You should be able to figure it out quite easily. There will be linkages coming from the PTO on the rear of the tractor. Follow them. They will lead to a lever. Make sure everyone is clear of the PTO and any attached implements, then GENTLY and SLOWLY pull the lever.

BTW, not a dumb question, just a dumb way to put it.

What do you mean you can't find levers to shift anything? What other levers are you missing?

If there's a PTO shaft sticking out the back, there has GOT to be a way to shift it into gear. Either that, or you only have part of a tractor.

The way you came on here... From all appearances you were a tractor newbie, and a disaster waiting to happen. Too many times people buy tractors like this, not knowing what they have, how to use it, or how DANGEROUS it is. They get HURT, even KILLED because they just jump on the tractor, slam it in the fastest gear, rev it up, and go charging across the field without first doing their homework. We don't want to see that.

Hey GW These guys aint being sarcastic, Its just that we have all seen a lot of experieced farmers and tractor people get hurt,And I think they just dont want to read about a guy getting hurt working on a old red tractor. There was just a 86 year old farmer killed last week Uncle of 1 of tha AC forum guys. So dont get your feelings hurt and order a manual .

Hi.My feelings wernt hurt,,and im sorry about that man that got killed,my thoughts go out to the family.
But i am not the owner of the tractor,,i only drive it.We use it to plow snow. You see,,my father is 88 years old,,cant drive it,so i do.Im dissabled, with arithritis, and im on social assistance,so purchasing a manual at this time isnt in my budget.Ill get a farmer here at home to help me locate it,for he had a tractor like that a few years ago.He told me that he will see if he can find the PTO lever.I looked and there isnt any,not so i can see. When i locate it ,ill let you know,ok?Thanks for your advice,,it was all good, dont get me wrong, and i hope i didnt make any bad friends here .for i will have to ask more dumb questions along the way. And,I did drive a tractor before.....for years..... Regards,,,GW
